Lead sling bullets from Cyprus
Jun 25th, 2014 at 4:00pm

Quite a lot of lead bullets were found in Cyprus (Ino Nicolaou published a bunch of them). But the Cessnola collection in the Metropolitan  Museum in New York has a bunch of them.

Catalogued:
http://www.metmuseum.org/search-results?ft=%22sling+bullets%22&x=-1045&y=-58

And here's a pic, too. Notice how there are 6 basic models of the type we know and love (the top left hand one must be broken), the "rugby ball" shaped one, about the size of your thumb or smaller, probably in the 30-35g range; and a big bullet, which probably weighs about 120 g or so.

Apologies for the horrible picture-- took it through glass with a cheap camera.

[EDIT: In fact, I had dropped my camera, and it refused to focuse. I have gone through a very large number of cheap digital cameras, either lost or dropped and damaged, not to mention scratched.]

the top left has been used - not broken Smiley

and yeah, that is one horrendous picture. If you stand back and squint it won't give you a headache Smiley

Yep, the top left looks used. I had one similar damage on mine, except bit more dramatic, after hitting a brick from close range.

Good point about it being used. I've handled a few which were clearly squashed from impact. This one, I think, exhibits a clear *break*, which could come from a particular type of impact.

The really interesting thing about deformed lead sling bullets, is that if you pick them up as soon as you can they get pretty warm. The deformation and impact creates a fair bit of heat.

A client has just given me some 50 calibre bullets. I figure two end to end with a small bite of lead flashing holding them together should make a great glande.

C_A ,unfortunately they would result a very long and narrow bullet, that would be very hard to rifle spin in a stable way.
I've slung 14.5mm bullets, with their butt end forward..even a single one was hard to throw rifled, although sometimes they did.  They would weight about 45grams (28grams=1oz)
