The second idea is a faster to do method for flat or fishtail braids, shown with 8 in this example.
The problem with fishtail braids is that braiding with single strands (9a) is very slow. Taking two strands together increases braiding speed, transforming e.g. your 8 strand braid in an effective 4-strand braid (9c), but reduces the braidīs density. Flat braids with pair numbers of strands also tend to twist a little. Therefore I divide the 8 strands in 3 and 5 and always take two strands together. This method leads to a steady recombination of strands, keeping the density high and showing a slightly rough pattern (9b). The braiding speed and lack of twisting are the same as in a classical 5-strand braid. Note the recombination of strands, e.g. brown+blue in 1 vs. white+blue in 5 or orange+black in 3 vs. yellow+black in 6.
P.S. I forgot to say that this method works with every number of strands (minimum 8) that can be divided in two odd numbers with a difference of two, i.e. with 8 (3+5), 12 (5+7), 16 (7+9), 20 (9+11), ...
