There are several reasons for lobbing, for some people, it is more accurate, it's easier on the joints, it doesn't destroy your target/backstop. Those are some that come quickly to mind, I am quite sure there are others.
I shoot a traditional longbow at archery tournaments. The draw weight of my bow is around 40 pounds (18kg). It is much lighter than the bow I use hunting, and that bow is about 1/2 the draw weight of a warbow. I really don't consider the tournaments as any kind of training or practice, I consider them more of a social event. Basically, a bunch of people who walk through the woods, shooting at foam rubber animals and gossiping about what we have been doing.
I am pretty sure that there is a lot of that at these compititions, I noticed that most of the pictures posted when several members went were of socializing. There are some people who practice daily, throw X times at each distance and are at the event to win. Others are there to meet friends that they don't usually get to see except at these meets.
Now, the correct question about lobbing or flatlining is this: "Am I enjoying myself?" If you are, then it doesn't matter what someone else's reason for slinging is, we are all individuals and we all have different reasons for slinging.
