Making simple bobbins / spools
May 27th, 2013 at 8:24am

In this topic I will present you two easy ways to make simple bobbins / spools to organize your threads while making a sling.
The first type of spool is a simple cardboard edge with a cut in it. Quick and easy to make.

However you will experience that the above type of bobbin can easily become undone and then you have to rearrange the thread on it.
Therefore for bigger works which require longer strings and stretch over several weeks/months I use little wood plates (4.5 cm x 2 cm x 0.8 cm) with a hole in it. You can also make them out of cardboard or other materials. It depends on how heavy you like them.

You coil them in the following way:
Place your loose end on the plate and coil the thread around it.

Then you put the end you work with through the hole.
If you now need more thread you just lift the topmost loop over the bottom of the plate.

This system is cheap to make, will never uncoil and is also easily storable.

I like the plate with the hole in it.  Nice idea.  Being a net maker my first thought is to use netting needles.  They have been designed to hold large quantities of twine as a net is being made.  The Norwegian style will NOT unwind if the needle accidentally droppeed.  Tony

I used spools of first type.  Spools with holes look really promising, thanks for sharing, Teg.

I've been using wooden spools with the working end half hitched around the spool ... but one would occasionally get away and unravel.
I'm certainly going to try this method for my next bobbin set.

asemery, where did you get those needles? I could use a few sizes under an inch wide. The narrow ones are a bit difficult to make  Sad

I'm glad that you like it  Smiley.

I actually forgot to mention some tips:
- Don't wrap too close to the hole. If you leave a space of about 2-3 mm it will be easier to pick up the uppermost loop.
- Don't wrap too close to the bottom of the plate. Otherwise there might slip a coiled thread out.
- Always leave enough string before the bobbin. Otherwise you won't be able to pull the uppermost loop over the bottom of the plate.

For storing loose thread I recommend the first type. It's faster to unwind a piece of thread as with the plates. There it also doesn't matter if a thread gets loose. They also have a bigger cappacity than the plates.
