Modern day trebuchet in Syria

Jump to 45 seconds, the rest of it is just gun-waving propaganda:

It is a very advanced modern design of trebuchet, the weight connects with a cable to an arm with outriggers that make it act like a pulley. You get constant torque on the arm throughout the entire power stroke.

The design is based on Leonard Vance's MURLIN. Not to contradict David too much, but the lengths of the "sprocket" arms is calculated to give different amounts of leverage at different points of arm rotation. I don't think the Syrian machine quite follows best practice here. In terms of utilizing the energy stored in the raised counterweight the MURLIN is the most efficient design yet.

Here's a link to one of Vance's videos. (Looks like a version of my unisling design is used!)

MURLINs crop up in the strangest places. Thanks for finding this, David.

That is awesome. Is it legal to build them in the U.S for recreation(I.e. chuckng tennis balls to a dog)?

They're classified as Weapons of Medieval Destruction.

Chucking tennis balls for a dog is fine. Chucking the dog, not so much. And pulting cats is frowned on, too.
