Hello! New slinger from Germany.
Nov 27th, 2012 at 7:40am

Hello to all of you.  Smiley It`s great how many slingers there are around. Finally I found people to share this uncommon interest with. My first encounter with slinging was many years ago, after having seen an old David vs. Goliath movie (I think it`s mentioned in the movie thread here). Unfortunately my slinging experiments did not work, cause I tried to copy the style I`ve seen on TV. There the stone flew away without release of a cord, but only by acceleration of the sling in the last spin. Concluding that one of the two cords has to be released I made some more tries, but I never found the right technique. I always liked archeology themes, primitive skills (without being professional like many in this forum), knives, throwing boomerangs, also made some basic experiments with very simple atlatls, throwing some sticks. Well, I don´t remember how exactly I picked up again the particular interest for slinging, but in May this year I looked for some information in the web and discovered slinging.org. The first day I tried to build the simple sling by Chris Harrison as shown in the how to`s section. Using single unbraided hemp cords and without knowledge how to sling I made some wild overhead throws with too small stones. The next day I watched repeatedly the videos by David Taylor and after some more days started with the Tut-sling following the Timothy Potter tutorial, thinking that a cupped pouch would be better for a beginner. Having finished it I finally started “serious” slinging, finding my personal slinging style and improving it. Since May I built a lot of slings, sometimes one every day, taking almost every idea from you guys on the forum. Slinging and sling-making became my favorite hobby, with the side-effects that I´m always looking for cord and pouch materials in shops and for sling stones everywhere. My slinging site is a lake near my home, where I throw the stones in, but I don´t have a good place to practice accuracy (i.e. shooting against a target that is not the lake surface). Having read the whole “pictures of slings and slinging” and some other threads, it was time to sign up and register. Here I am. Thanks to all of you for the great pics, advices and experiences.  Cheesy

Hoi Lakeslinger!

Hello and welcome.  I looked at your slings, I am very impressed.  Your sling with two release cords looks like it would work vey well for throwing many small projectiles.  You may have to make the pouch more cup shaped so the shot doesn't fall out during the throw.  I think I will give it a try.

An idea for a target at the lake would be a plastic bottle with a few small stones inside for weight and a long string tied to the bottle to retrieve it when you are done.  You could use a staff sling to toss the bottle for extra distance. Grin

Thanks for the idea! I´ll give a try. Maybe I already found a place for slinging not only into water. It`s near the lake, somehow hidden without people crossing. I tried to hit a tree from about 10-15 m and wasn`t bad for the first try (6 of 10 stones hit the tree).

The experimental sling is very cupped, maybe it can´t be seen well on the picture.

I could see the cup, I ust want to throw a lot more than it will hold.  That way, I think I will get a very dense pattern.

You`re right, the pouch is not deep enough to hold many small projectiles. I hope you`ll post a pic of your
sling when it will be finished.
