the smoked meat forum has a little animated ball of flame. That looks pretty good.
Just two frames that i can see. So the slinging one could be the one above and then another just as the missile has been released from the sling - that'd make a decent 2 frame animation.
Think icons are a 16x16 grid. have to look into it
I never tried doing animations and animated favicons. And AFAIK, it requires inserting some HTML code into each page of the site, pointing to GIF animated image (ICO doesn't support animation, AFAIK). If the site has some template engine (probably does), it should be rather simple.

Yes, but usually result is bad... Anyway, I draw in Inkscape, free vector graphics editor, aligning figures to grid, and ask it to render image to 32x32 icon (or 16x16).
