Knotted pouch made & advice for connection needed
Oct 28th, 2012 at 4:12pm

Hey all

I made a new knotted pouch, maybe the first of this type ever made (although in the world of slinging you can never be sure about that Wink ).
See the photos below!

I adapted a way to knot rope baskets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbM8FHE5YEk

This pouch is heavily shaped and holds round balls really nice. Although it is a little bit stiff, so I'm not completely sure if it will allow for a clean release.

It is made out of polyester string.

Now my question is: Does somebody know a fancy way to attach the retention and release cords to this pouch? The simplest thing to do would be to make a reef knot (or a cow hitch) into the loops to attach another loop of string, then maybe whip over it (not necessarily needed) and do a 3 strand braid. But I'm looking for something a bit more complex/nicer.
To start with we have 3 loops of more or less the same length and one "active" string on each side.

I'm looking forward for your ideas and comments!

that is sweet! do you have enough pics for a tutorial, or not yet?  anyway, that looks like it would do best with large spherical ammo, maybe around an inch and a half to 3 inches in diameter. i would like to make one Grin

Beautiful and very unique. Definately worthy of something special for the cords.

Maybe you can incorporate a Margarita braid or 9 to 11 strand flat and tapered braid. You don't want to just loop and whip some cords onto it and a three strand braid just wouldn't do the pouch justice.

Take your time and if you can't come up with something right away, let something come to you.

I would weave them. You would use the strands you want to add as extra warps.

You could also just braid the three loops together, with the extra strands added in. This would be very flush and you wouldn't noticed the added strands.

You could also try doing a very decorative loop braid over a few strands. The loop braid wouldn't be tight enough to hold them in, so you'd have to stitch the extra strands in somewhere, but it could look pretty decorative.

That's a very unique, good looking pouch.  I'd like to see the tutorial also.  I would whip the cords on using a method somewhat like the one used here:

The cords would be attached securely and it would look great.

Thank you for your replies!

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures so I have to make another pouch.

I will make a tutorial as soon as I have time. Although it may take some days until I find half a day to sit down and make some good pictures.
A short sketch of the construction is nearly finished. I will upload it this week.

@squirrelslinger: Yes, this pouch suits better for spherical stones and not glandes. The width of this pouch is 3 cm, so rather small. I would not take bigger ammo than this. But it is possible to make larger pouches. At the moment I'm making a bag with around 25 cm diameter, 35 cm high with the same technique. Although here you have to add further radial strings to make it stable and dense enough

@Pikaru: Peruvian braids, that's one thing I have not tried yet. I fear that with this string it would get quite thick as you need 24 parallel cords or am I wrong? Thank you also for encouraging me to take time. You are right, the ideas are floating towards me Wink .

@xxxkid123: I like the idea to weave the transition, like first with 6 warps and then bundle them to make a smooth transition to the string.
Could you give me some samples of the loop braid you suggested? I also have no experience with this.

@Rat Man: I will certainly do a little whippings over the critical points. Although I don't think that I could just cut the loops as you did. Polyester is way more slippery than jute. Thank you also for pointing out this tutorial! I was not aware of it.

You can cut the loops when using synthetic materials.  I do it with all sorts of materials.  Just make sure to make the cut ends longer to allow for them being more slippery.  If you don't the sling will fall apart with no way to repair it.  If you do there's no problems.

Here is the short sketch of how this pouch is made. I hope it suits your needs for the moment  Wink

A more detailed tutorial with photos will follow.

I haven't yet made up my mind on the attachment method.

Teg, I'll try to elaborate as soon as i can (sometime over the weekend).

I can't pull out any string to show physical examples, and I'm bad at explaining things via text (as you've probably noticed).

I finally made my mind up for an attachment method, half knotted, half woven:
