I would say he is carrying either a flagpole or a pike, using a socket attached to a belt. He has a neck pouch and two javelins. I don't think he is a slinger.

same here.
plus that looks more like a lyre or similiar musical instrument on his back. And a pigeon or dove on his shoulder.
I suspect there's a whole lot of symbolism going on here that we just don't understand.

If you stand about 6 feet back from the computer screen it's a lot clearer.

What era roman is he ?
If he's from the holy roman era could well be a depiction of a saint with the things symbolising his miracles or the deeds he was known for.

here it is - enlarged a bit and I've upped the contrast so it's a bit clearer.

It still helps to disply it full screen and take a few steps back from the screen.

Is this not a bird-catcher ? Cage, lure, spear (?), javelins (?). Not a pole in a socket, but I think just the edge on the tunic.

Bird, tree, pole, cage, cord (prepared with birdlime maybe?). Birdcatcher sounds very probable. An antique Papageno, so to speak.

Yes, that's what I was thinking of-- in French it's called "gluaux", these sort of sticks with glue (or rather bird lime) to catch birds. Google gives me "lime sticks", which is rather boring.

"Leimrute" ("lime rod") in German.

that would make sense, then the thing on his back would be a cage to hold the captured birds.
