Indian paddle/warpaddle for a client
Aug 25th, 2012 at 8:53pm

Hey, I just finished this paddle for a client.  It is 54in. long and made from a single piece of spruce, carved in the native american style.  The blade and handgrip are fire hardened and the edges sharp on the blade with a spine running down the center of the blade for strength.  It is based on authentic pieces from the http://anthro.amnh.org/north ; .

It is my first paddle so any advice and tips would be great, thanks for looking.

Google DeBrys' engravings from the early 16th century.  These came from what is now Virginia, North Carolina area, I think they are a pretty close match.  You do some outstanding work.

That's a piece of art!
How much does it weight?

Mauro.

Very nice, Luke.  The only advice I have is to keep making paddles.

Great job Luke. My only suggestion would be to maybe make the end more diamond shaped with a little more weight towards the tip.

I have never actually seen a crossection of one, all the pics on the internet are square on... so you are saying that it is thicker toward the tip?
Some I have seen are diamond shaped, others have a distinct "spine" like ridge running down the center and others are just round, as with ball headed warclubs I think a lot is open to artistic license.  Speaking of which I just got another club carved, will have it done soon, this one is kind of evil looking though, didn't intend it to be but it has that "black knight" look to it.
The paddle was picked up and payed for today, Cry I'm gonna miss the little guy... Of course I now am $125 richer... Cheesy

It really feels good to be paid by someone who appreciates your craft.

Paddles and Nautical Gear!

Hey, thought I would start a topic for this as I finished my second paddle!  This one is also spruce, fire hardened and decorated by covering with mud where you don't want it to burn then holding it over a flame or hot coals.  The blade is leaf shaped to allow it to be quieter in the water, slipping in and out easily and it moves remarkable smoothely through the water, I was out kayaking with my freind Rob and took it along, we both really liked using it.  The ridge running to the point also channels water to drip solely from that point making it quieter.  As most of my stuff is, this is also for sale in the Vendors Row section.

I agree!! It's a great work and will be added to the older topic, so we can better see how your carving technique has improved!
Another great job Luke, you're really getting yourself in!!  Smiley

Mauro.
