Just remember, you gotta have a guy with the helmet with the big brush thing on top. Instant classic.

The 'brush thing' was worn only by centurion, soldiers who commanded a century, or a band of 100 legionnaires.  Legionnaires were the standard Roman soldier, making up the bulk of Rome's armies.  They did not have any brushes or relative distinctive features on their helmets.  Roman slingers wore little armor, as opposed to a legionnaire or centurion, using a round shield instead for protection.  Look up "roman funditor" on google.

I'd also highly suggest reading a book on Roman military forces and the like.

This made me lol. Is the main character going to be named either "Bigguth Dickuth" or "Incontinentia Buttocks"? Grin

I wish you luck, there are many methods of writing, as many as there are writers, you could go with the flow, and let the book basically write itself, likepiers anthony dpes, you could plan major plot points, then fill in the rest, and thousands of other methods, one site you may want to visit , agent query.com, full of great information

love the ...finally - you're 13-14, 'finally'
brilliant  Smiley

Well the first thing you should do is go and read 'The Far Arena' by ben sapir
One of the best books set - mostly - in the roman era I've ever read.

The marcus didio falco books are also worth reading, plenty of roman background there, too Smiley

hey, if twilight can get published....  Wink

I kid. I kid. Definitely go for it. You will learn a lot by actually trying. As a suggestion I might suggest making the main character close to your own age. A common mistake is for a younger author to try and write just like older authors and imagine they know what it is like to be 25 or 40, and realistically it's going to be different than you imagine it will be and your readers will be able to tell that you don't really know. So write as you and those your age would be if you were conscripted or hired as a slinger at about your age. This is something you'll be able to do better than most adults because most adults forget what it's like to be younger. They forget how they thought an what their perception was and so their younger characters are just as false as the older characters of younger authors. So play to your strength  Smiley

Read and research a ton, and don't expect it too be done soon.
Use a lot of outlines.

Keep the group updated and feel free to ask any questions.

Authors will only write well about what they know a lot about.

Take a trip to Italy and you'll understand what really was the Roman Empire  Smiley

I dug some Roman towns and no matter how much you read, truth will always be 1000 times better than any written word.

By the way I also like to write novels and we're quite a bunch of writers here! Welcome aboard!
Greetings,
Mauro.

If I understood correctly, the Roman Empire was a context which is really distant from everything you may read on it.
You may read of invincible Legions, smart women, conquers, betrayals and fine engineers and philosophers.
All this is 1/10 of what an excavation can tell you.
It's something hard to understand but I feel astonished by the true power of the Roman heritage the first time I dug something Roman, and I don't like the Roman Empire at all  Smiley
Greetings,
Mauro.
