Cool Yeah! Cotton-Tail  Rabbit , Fox Squirrel and the occasional Pigeon or Dove.. not for a long time though. Grew up on a farm.  Learned my slingshot from migrant laborers who were hunting for table meat. I had a Saunders Wrist Rocket.

We have had a few people on the Forum who have hunted with their slings, taking game as large as small deer.

I just made myself a board-cut frame and banded it with chained rubber bands sold in toy stores as "rubber band gun ammo". I used the yellow "magnum" bands, I believe #33's, tapered in a 3-3-3-2-2 configuration. I was skeptical about the power this thing would get, so I hauled out some old marksman slingshot I used to hunt rabbits with as a kid, I got some bands at the hardware store and started testing. Not only was the homemade slingshot more accurate than the store-bought ones, it was much more powerful, too. It would easily punch holes in a coffee can, while the others just dented them. Since I'd taken game with the marksman before, I had no doubt about my homemade one.
I started carrying it with me when I fed the sheep and chickens and taking a few shots every day at fenceposts and whatnot. I've gotten pretty good. There are these whistle pigs (local name- woodchucks, I guess) that have been destroying the foundation of the barn and eating my garden up, so I thought I'd take a shot at one, given the chance. Today one of my kittens gave me the chance, by cornering one by the house. The woodchuck is bigger than the kitten by a good stretch, so he was hanging back far enough to be safe from me, so I took a few shots. After a couple of misses, I switched from rocks to hex nuts and nailed him between the eyes. I was pretty impressed with the result. Slingshots are not to be underestimated. I will definitely keep this handy for pests and I'm looking into the hunting regs to see if I can use it for game. Here's a pic, and thanks for this thread. I can't wait to try a flat band. I hear they are even better.

Nice sling shot! I think that chaining method was used before commerically available surgical rubber was around for slingshots, along with tire innertubes (way back when- modern innertubes are hard and non stretchy). I also tried braiding rubber bands before in a flat braid. It felt like it was more powerful than the chains, but I think that other methods would have more potential.

Thanks! I am really stoke to have something that fits in my pocket and has both the power and the accuracy to deal with small pests, silently, too! Plus, this is the third one of these I've made from a single cheap bag of bands, and I'm only halfway through it. 2 rubber bands broken so far (about 2 weeks, maybe 50 shots a day, rotating between 3 slingshots- That's like 233 shots per slingshot, average, with one set of bands so far). I dusted the bands with talc and that seems to help the durability- both of the broken bands were on the least used slingshot, which got no talc. Also, failures seem to occur with individual bands, so there's less chance of getting a band back in the eye (though eye protection is a must, in my book). I'm gonna play with other bands and other configurations, as soon as I can get to the city to get materials. The local stores have some ancient, cracked, mixed-bag rubber bands. Thought I'd save my money. I think I'll go ahead and drop some money on wood, as I'm almost out, and I plan to make some of these as gifts for the kids I know. Maybe I should get some theraband gold while I'm at it. Any pointers on going flat?

How's the band durability with flatbands? I just want to know how much rubber I should plan on having around, since I'm WAY off the beaten track, and resupply is a chore. Any tips on making flat bands?
I wouldn't want to be hit with one of your hex nuts. The accuracy of a slingshot really floored me, once I got my technique down. All of the sudden I had more power than my airgun, better accuracy, it fits in my pocket, with ammo, and cost about 5 bucks to make, less to maintain. Perfect.

they last a long time i cut mine at 91/2 inches with a tapered cut most of the time when it starts to cut its where the pouch is and i cut it re tie it and shoot some more the one i shoot now is about 2months old and still shooting good when i hunt i take about 4 sling shots in my bag so if one breaks i dont have to stop and work on it. and for ammo i use all kinds of stuff marbels are my favorit because they skip nuts nuts filled with lead 36 cal lead balls river clay rolled in to balls and fire harden send me your address in a pm and i will send you out one
