Here's a new show coming to tv this fall that conciveably looks pretty awesome. It kinda has all the SHTF situations we talk about. The exact circumstances under this show is phiscally impossible but the concept's really cool. It proomts some cool thought and conversation too. And the trailer has TSFH. Historically, NBC shows aren't too great but I'm hoping they do a good job with this one. Hopefully they get some good actors, writers, and fight correagraphers and this show will make a few seasons, we'll see.

What do you guys think?

Has anyone else noticed that in the clip being shown on TV, the girl's crossbow appears to be backwards?

I was interested for a second, then I realized that it was on NBC and probably crap. The trailer looked pretty bad to me, something more like an extremely stereotypical hollywood show than anything (where they take unrealistic to new dimensions).

Planes don't fall out of the sky, you'd have to do some serious crap to one to make it completely fall. If everything were to die, I'm pretty sure the plane would just go into a really steep dive.

Yeah, I think he's holding the crossbow backwards. Either that, or it's a new type of cross bow where the limbs directly bend and store the energy behind the bolt, rather than having it transfer to a string?

But who knows, here's hoping. Iron man was an awesome movie, I have faith Smiley

In that event, I would poop my pants, clean them up, get stoned, overdose and suicide  Grin

Wait, that's not a cool way to go huh? Alright, I can head out to ways, either East to the Sierra Nevada and maybe Lake Tahoe (large lake in Cal), or west to the Bay area. The Bay area is really densely populated, even though I'm aiming for natural lands and suburbs. It does have year round nice weather, and I wouldn't have to brave extreme cold (never less than 50), nor would I have to face extreme heat (barely makes it past 80). On the flip side, Tahoe has a lot less people, and I doubt there would be any faux governments there. It is very cold during the winter, and I would have to fight nature instead. Bears are a major problem too.

The premise could lead to an interesting show, but as kid says, it' NBC.  I hope it turns out to be a great show but, you know, it's NBC.
Anyway, my best chance I guess would be in the Pine Barrens.  I know the area well, there's lots of fresh water, wildlife, level ground to farm, etc..  I'd grow corn, tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers.. the easy stuff to start with.  The fishing is great around there.. the Spring herring and white perch runs are spectacular, and there's plenty of deer and other game.  In the summer there's tons of berries and other wild plants to eat.
My choice of weaponry won't surprise anyone.  I'd go with a few slings, an atlatl, and bow and arrow.  I'd also have a stout thrusting spear.
Surviving the initial madness and rioting would be the most challenging part, I imagine.  There would be lawlessness, famine, plague, even cannibalism before the population was culled down to a number that could survive without modern technology.  Surviving that initial part would be the real trick to success.

Interesting question I have, would you guys take a gun? I think a shotgun or small caliber rifle, like a modified 10/22 (with a high capacity magazines, and tacticool stock) would be pretty useful. While my main weapon for hunting would still be a crossbow or normal bow, I think a gun would be extremely useful for human enemies. Of course that would also mean a lot of extra weight (maybe 15+ pounds in ammo and the gun), but at the same time it could save a life.

I have my doubts. The end of the trailer bothered me where there is an 80's era functioning internet and a magic flash drive that will restore civilization. But it could be cool.

I'd differ slightly Kid in that modern planes have such a crappy glide ratio it wouldn't quite be falling but it wouldn't be a nice controlled dive that would have been possible 60 years ago. And high performance aircraft which have to be trimmed hundreds of times a minute by computer would basically fall out of the sky. Still that's probably giving NBC way to much credit  Cheesy Grin

I'd definitely include a 10/.22 in my initial bug out. Probably with a .22 revolver too. I'd stay clear of the extended magazines though, the couple times I've had an opportunity to use them they've jammed often. 10 rounds is a fair amount. For hunting, and even protection it'd be worth its weight. But as Ratman said growing crops is your only chance once the herd is thinned down enough that they wouldn't just eat all your work and leave you with nothing. Timing it right would be important.

I live in a little valley which is still mostly descendants of the original homesteaders, still mostly ranchers. I bet someone would just dynamite the canyon to close the main road and post guards on the dirt road over the mountain. Then life would be pretty much "normal", by local standards. We're already pretty isolated and self sufficient , here. My biggest worry would be the mercs the oil and gas companies would probably hire to protect their facilities. It seems that some of their employees are already "playing dead" on the side of the road to lure in good samaritans, then robbing them at gunpoint.

I would take my 12 gauge shotgun and all of the shells I could carry while keeping in mind that this is a finite resource.  Eventually, no matter how many you take you'll run out of shells or they'll get damp and go "stale."  Also, no matter how careful you are your gun will eventually break.  I would use my gun as little as possible with it in mind that sometime in the future, be it a year or ten, I won't have a gun.  By that time I'd better be a sling/bow and arrow/atlatl and trapping expert.

Kid, the backwards crossbow is a thing.

My expectations are low but I'll probably watch it anways.

I'd probably rely heavily on Bows and Arrows later in the period, I'd really try to conserve ammunition but it won't last forever.

Dan, I'm not sure what to think. I'm not a crossbow shooter, so I can't really comment, but often times funky designs get too funky, and don't really shoot as well as good old fashioned designs. I haven't handled it though...

One thing I just realized is that my plan doesn't follow scenario. Since it's only technology dieing, I'll probably just go about normal life without tech, before things really break apart and SHTF. Sure things would be hectic and crazy, but SHTF would only occur when militias and real anarchy occurs, when people give up on society and start fighting for their own lively hoods. I have just enough faith in humanity that we'll maintain order, until the public turns loony. So I won't be escaping immediately.

Actually the more I think about this, the less likely everything is. I highly doubt that militias could ever rise, even when most of society is dead. Even with modern technology not working, steam engines, bikes, etc would still be functioning. Roads don't fall apart, even with our kind of infrastructure  Grin Traversing the US on road from San fransisco to Washington DC, about as far as you can get in the US is around 2817 miles. If the US gov't in DC were to tell all local army units to start martial law across the US, I would think they could get across the US within 1 month with a relay system. It takes the Tour De France 23 days usually, and covers around 2000 miles. I would think with a relay system and multiple people biking together, they could make it and spread the word.

Shoot this better be a good show....

Unfortunately for Holllywoood, (outside of Divine intervention) there aren't really any buyable TEOTWAKI scenarios for the entire planet.

If they show can kind of 'brain wash' you into the show, it'll be much better. Again low expectations for NBC but I might watch it anyway just because the concept is cooler than most other shows.
