What Weapons Would You Choose for a Melee?
Jul 27th, 2012, 1:15pm

You're about to be involved in an ancient battle.  This is clan against clan, not an organized Roman type battle.  Everyone will bring his favorite weapons from home and all hell will break loose.  So what do you bring?

First I would bring a sling.. a big, serious sling for launching stones no smaller than an extra large chicken's egg.  Hopefully I could pick off one or two of the enemy as we closed in.  My main weapon would be a nice, dense staff, about five feet long.  You can do a lot of damage with such a weapon if you know how to use it.  I would also have a short, thick, heavy cudgel on a lanyard around my left wrist.  This would be for anyone who got inside of my staff's defense.  BONK!  As a back up weapon I'd carry a dagger.  Let's get it on!!

No fair, Rattata! Slings aren't a melee weapon Angry

My first choice would be some sort of polearm; like a halberd, poleaxe, English/Italian bill, or heck--even a basic spear. Too many people seem to underrate polearms; When I had only 5-6 months of longsword under my belt, I attended a 2 hour spear class at an ARMA event and was already just as good with an 8' spear as I was with a sword. Not that that's saying much, but you get the point. (Pun not originally intended. Tongue)

My second choice would be a lovely longsword. (I prefer types XVIIIa and XVIa.)
However my third choice is a tie between an arming sword and buckler and a sidesword and dagger. (For proficiency reasons rather than utility)
A mace would be nice if there was ample use of armour by my enemies...

So Ideally: polearm, longsword/bastardsword, and a dagger in the belt.

Round shield, broad sword, saxe and a mace.

The mace would be the first weapon into the combat. No need to focus on the edge as the whole thing is lethal and total destruction, armored or not. Sword as backup and the saxe for close up work if I find a fellow shieldmen to form a shield wall. The Romans weren't the only ones with shield wall tactics, they just perfected it.

Shortish spear with a heavy blade, useful for cut as well as thrust. Maybe a light axe as backup. And a good size knife.

Assuming I'm fighting to kill:
Large Knife - backup sidearm
Spike Tomahawk - short range melee
Rhomphaia - midrange melee
Glaive - long range melee

fighting only to disarm:
mini cane (about the length of my forearm not counting the crook) - backup sidearm
Sansetsukon - short, middle, and long range melee

18" Ontario knife Co. U.S. military issue machete.
Regulation wooden men's softball bat.
Starfire hook and point battle axe
And a Stilletto brand 22 oz. Roofing hammer.
Not exactly historical, but they're what I'm most comfortable with.,

I have a fondness for blunt style weapons........the club, or a long mallot, maybe a hammer or maul.
a cleaver for closer work, and as always a sling to soften them up for the dance Wink

One of the reasons I picked a staff (a club would do as well)  is that this will obviously be a close quarter battle with all sorts of weapons flying around everywhere.  A club or a staff isn't sharp so it won't get stuck in gear, bones, or skulls.  Also it has no edges or appendages so it won't get caught up in someone else's weapon or gear.
I did consider a mace or flail.  These are very effective weapons also.

The only weapon I have training expierience with is the knife so I think my primary weapon would probably be a good knife with a 7in blade. I'd also have a sling but this is just melee we are talking about so I would also like a really good Kukri too. Or if I was on the American frontier or having to survive someplace in the woods, I'd go with a knife and tomahawk. So Knife and Kukri, or Knife and Tomahawk depending on how much metal I have access too. And definitely a sling of course.

I fight well when I'm very close so as long as I had some light rawhide armor on my forearms and chest to deflect any initial strikes from the enemey (and some quick sandles), once I'm inside, I'm set.

If I had a few months to train I'd go with a Katana or Wakazashi, but being that this seems like a more immediate situation, I'll go with what I know.

I think my tactics would be more Special forces like and take a few of the best fighters from the clan and run guerilla warefare and sabatoge. Only occasionally running up against the larger clan.
