This weeks bark baskets!
Jul 22nd, 2012 at 4:29pm

Hey, here are some bark baskets I made up this week, actually it took 3 afternoons, from spruce and fir.  I made up a bunch earlier and sold them before I got pics.  They are sewn with spruce/fir root or inner poplar bark with a spruce bow rim.  I will be putting hemp carrying straps on all of them, I will post some more pics once I have them finished.

The largest would be about a foot square.  Some barks have a thick outer pulp and a stringy inner bark, others have a very thin outer pulp and a stringy inner pulp, if the outer pulp is too thick it will crack when you bend it, which is o.k. as long as you make cuts through the outer bark so it will crack along them and the inner bark holds it together.  Some of them are made this way, other barks that have a thin pulp will bend without cracking so I make my cuts on the inner bark, very very shallow cuts and bend it along those cuts and the outside is completely intact, I do prefer this method.

I sell them $20 for the smallest, $30 for the middle size and $40 for the largest, I tend to sell the $30 ones most often.

Here they are with braided hemp and jute straps, the big ones go over the shoulder and the small ones you carry in hand or on your belt.  I would love to go out and get the fiber for the handles myself but I am new to it and haven't found much that works well.  I have some ideas how I may be able to use a willow wand and I could use inner poplar bark but if I do that it will only raise the price and I doubt my customers would appreciate it much more.
