He has a bag-like pouch attached to the cords at diagonally opposite corners. The release cord is on the upper corner. When it is released the bag swivels around the lower opposite corner and dumps the shot.

Ok, I get it, can you use a regular side or over the head sling type throw also ?

All styles will be successful. But the amount of the rotation direction of the load is spread.
