My New Light Sling
Jul 6th, 2012 at 5:46pm

Here is a pic of my new LIGHT sling. She is 26" long and made of 1/8 nylon cord. This is a very easy sling to make and works as well as many of the more elaborate ones I have made and used. This is taken off the J. T. Potter sling site if you are interested. The loop is paracord and then wrapped (don't know the name of the knot used, but it is very strong and clean. Works well with nylon as when the ends are burned and flattened, there is no way things can slip !

Tried her out this morning and she can really send them .... the problem is I'm not accurate with it.

I have made slings since I was a kid, and just now getting back into it (I'm 62).

The second photo is of my standard ammo. It is about 2.5" long and about 1.5 wide plus or minus. I'm guessing it weighs in at about 5 OZ.

All comments are welcome, I have a million questions, but those will be on another post.

LOL, LOL. don't know how really experienced I am, but I am a senior ;- )

Will be taking this sling out tomorrow for a run, just made an exact copy just because I had some extra 1/8 on hand ;~)

I just bought some 1/8 black and silver nylon cord for slings and also some 550 paracord in camo.

Will post different slings when I make them.

Any of you that have clean paracord designs please let me know, there is one very cool design on this site by Cliff, that I will try to make. Has anyone made this and tried it out, how does it work, it looks very clean and usable !

I made one of Cliff's slings, because it looked cool and functional to me, too. I was disappointed that, even following all the tips for securing the finishing ends it still wants to pull out of shape pretty severely on every throw. Additionally, the split pouch is not as resilient as other braided or woven splits I have tried. It looks nice, but I don't ever use it for these reasons. For paracord, I would go with a Peaceful Jeffrey (PJ) or a medical tape pouch. For splits, I use a braided balearic or rockman style. They flex to fit the ammo, and then go right back to where they were before the throw. Your sling looks very neat and functional, by the way.

I've made a couple and I like the design for slinging tennis balls. IMHO it's equal to the PJ sling.

I want my slings to be light weight and functional. I like the Rockman style and will test making it with some new nylon cord I have coming in.

The sling I have pictured is very, very simple, yet throws a rock a long way. The lightness of the sling itself is a big advantage as the minute the rock is released the sling quickly fall back as it has very, very little mass. I get a very clean release with this set up. I might add that almost all the weight you feel is the stone you are throwing, not the mass of the sling itself, another big plus.

The only thing I might learn to do is add a net type pouch for throwing small stones, if I can figure out how to do it.

I'd make a couple solid pouches and maybe some kind of good split pouch too. You are going to find them more versatile. Still a cool sling though.

Welcome to slinging.org.

Thanks for the welcome and the hints.

Yes, I would like to find a simple web system, I may use the five loop Jeffry system, but I would love a unit with four strands. If any one knows a four strand system let me know. The only thing I can think of is just adding two more strands to the unit I already have. If I did add strands I would consider those strands a smaller diameter to keep the two end knots small. I then would weave using the smaller diameter cord, keeping things as light as possible. I would like to use 200 to 300 lb Dyneema fishing line, just don't know if you can burn the ends like nylon and make a bead ?

What you think.
