Slinging In The Rain

Hi All, My son is 8 and daughter 11, and I wanted to show them some of the things we used to make in the 70s, like Dutch arrows, catapults, crossbows, onagers and the like. I saw a slinging demo about 20 years ago and had a go myself, and have just got around to making some of my own. I came across this forum and have been entranced by the slings people make. I made a few tennis ball slings over the weekend and plan to make a few more next weekend. I like the look of the 'Captain Paul' leather slings, and also the braided and woven King Tut style. Anyway here are some photos of some of the slings I made last weekend. The first one I made (not shown) was out of a length of 15mm webbing with a loop tied one end and a knot the other, and a 4" slit in the centre for a pouch (heat sealed). This took 3 or 4 minutes and did work, but the webbing was too wide really. Then I found some 2" jute furniture strapping, and jute? sash cord, and using an old hand crank sewing machine made the sling below. I stretched the centre of the pouch to make a cup. This works pretty well with stones and tennis balls, and is the one my son uses the most. The ends of the cords were flattened between the folds of the strap, and the whole thing sewn over backwards and forwards using bonded nylon thread. The first version had a knotted finger loop, which my son said made his finger a bit sore, so I added the leather loop.
