Hello from Ynys Môn/Anglesey
Jul 4th, 2012, 9:57am

Hi All,

My son is 8 and daughter 11, and I wanted to show them some of the things we used to make in the 70s, like Dutch arrows, catapults, crossbows, onagers and the like. I saw a slinging demo about 20 years ago and had a go myself, and have just got around to making some of my own. I came across this forum and have been entranced by the slings people make.

I made a few tennis ball slings over the weekend and plan to make a few more next weekend. I like the look of the 'Captain Paul' leather slings, and also the braided and woven King Tut style.

Anyway here are some photos of some of the slings I made last weekend. The first one I made (not shown) was out of a length of 15mm webbing with a loop tied one end and a knot the other, and a 4" slit in the centre for a pouch (heat sealed). This took 3 or 4 minutes and did work, but the webbing was too wide really.

Then I found some 2" jute furniture strapping, and jute? sash cord, and using an old hand crank sewing machine made the sling below. I stretched the centre of the pouch to make a cup. This works pretty well with stones and tennis balls, and is the one my son uses the most.

The ends of the cords were flattened between the folds of the strap, and the whole thing sewn over backwards and forwards using bonded nylon thread. The first version had a knotted finger loop, which my son said made his finger a bit sore, so I added the leather loop.

Sling number 2 is a 'Sierra Nevada' from the tutorial on this site, modified into an Apache style.

I made the pouch too small (for a tennis ball), then decided to add the leather....not too sure at the moment.

It has a tapered release, and made a nice crack before I added the leather.

The next sling has a leather pouch with the cords sewn in...OK for lobbing tennis balls but not up to anything heavier. My wife has been using this one.

Then I made another braided sling, which my daughter uses, again with a tapered release, using cotton builder's line and some red waxed linen upholstery thread for colour. I actually made it for me to use, but made the finger loop just a little too tight.

Finally, a leather and paracord sling, with the leather (pigskin I think) punched and the pouch shaped over a tennis ball. The paracord was sewn around the edge of the pouch first in a continuous ring, then holes punched in the leather close to the cord.

Sorry the photos are a big large...will resize and repost later.

e2a. Here is the detail showing the pouch. I am not very good at using the hand crank, and found it very tricky to sew round the angles, plus the paracord was hard to keep in place. The holes were to make it into a kind of net, and you can see how the circles have become ovals after stretching over a tennis ball. The pigskin is a bit thin for rough stones, and I will probably stick to tennis balls with this one.

Hello from Alabama in the US.  You are making some good slings.  One of the things we tell newcomers is to try out different types of slings and different forms of slinging, you seem to be well ahead of most newcomers.  Welcome to the site, you should enjoy the different view points and the various topics here.
