Lead glans amazing experience
Jun 11th, 2012, 9:12am

I hope it's ok,that i start a new topic about this,i've been searching without much success, the discussion about the sound of lead glans. C_A if i remember correctly ,stated that they sound like bees.I replied that, smooth, symmetrical ones don't have much noise, besides some silent SHHH noise. Yesterday me and a few friends went to nice lake, and i took the 3 lead glans (57g) i had in the moment, painted 2 of them black and one red for better visibility in the air,as i never done that before.
The paint job did a nice work, they were much easier to see, even the guys in the back saw them,at least sometimes. So from now on,all the distance lead will be painted black.

The second thing was, that i never really heard much sound from the exactly same ammo, same sling before, but somehow,i guess the lake or the large crater in which it is located made it hearable. They sounded like a small rocket,or a bullet through the air,a silent SHHHHHHHHH
I was amazed, surprised as i've slung dozens of the same ammo, same sling,no audible sound.

The third thing shocked me and surprised my friends..Besides the impacts (Deadly impacts)at loong ranges were nicely visible, and audible ,in a ~8m (25feet) radius we could see tiny splashes around, like 20-30 of them, instantly. My first reaction was WOOOW,and though it's the water drops made those tiny splashes. After the second and third shots,i noticed that they appear INSTANTLY as the gland hits the water,so the up flying and dropping back droplets were no more a plausible explanation. A friend told me,that they may be the small fishies that swim close to the surface, get scared and quickly sail away. This is the only plausible explanation i could get so far,to this strange phenomen.
I was slinging 3\4 across the lake ,without optimal terrain and warm up,and after arriving home,i measured the distance and it was about 320 meters. This pretty much corresponds with my estimate that i can surely get 350m,but until now i had no means to measure it,just judge it from sight, and experience, and the quite precise distance estimating ability i developed (probably many here)through slinging and measuring distances on google earth.(Probably many here)
DEFINITELY i'm going to make some more distance slinging on a closer lake with a 500m dam. I'm quite confident i could reach close to 400m with ideal launch elevation, and with a much more turned body rotation than i did yesterday.
I'm curious if you guys had some similar experiences with the story above.
Yurek,C_A surely have something to say..

I shoot very much with pleasure balls. These also fly possibly to 350 m. Glandes I do not like so much, because they in the flight now and then the direction
change.

I haven't slung much lead with a sling but I make and throw lots of clay biconals.  If they spiral, they don't seem to make much noise but if they go end over end, they are very noisy.  They also loose a lot of range due to air resistance.  So, if you got what you think is a good throw but the distance wasn't as good as you thought it should have been, that may be a reason.

lmao - so now you believe me that glandes make noise ?

Try standing at the impact end like I did.  Wink

As for your multiple impacts - maybe something to do with the vortex of air that the spinning glande creates. Could be you are seeing the effect of the air surrounding the glande on the water's surface. Doubtful it's shoals of small fish.

Also with the spinning of the glande you should get drops of water thrown sideways, glandes spin very fast, so these sideways droplets would show almost instantly.

Glandes will only change direction in midair jaegoor if they wobble leaving the pouch. The spin will eventually self orient the glande and it will straighten up and accelarate.

But if slung with a good technique should just fly straight and true the whole way.

@ Jaegoor: pleasure balls? those that are pushed in a females girl thingy? Shocked i'm not familiar with those, but Jaegoor you have found another great use to them Cheesy and i wonder that they fly so far.
Glandes,i would bet that fly further (assuming those balls aren't filled with depleted uranium or gold),and self orient very quickly if not thrown perfectly,at the cost of range of course.

@ Bill Skinner: i've also thrown dozens and dozens of clay biconicals but, again like with lead never heard a sound of them, until i've slung them above a crater lake. And yep,i've had sometimes bad throws with clay glandes, starting sideways and it really cuts their range, although with lead i have no chance to tell, besides with a extremly nice slow motion capture camera.

@ C_A yes, i always believed they make some silent noise, but until this over lake slinging, none were audible. Again as i wrote earlier, glandes and glandes having different shapes, sizes, surfaces will have different sound of varying loudness,as you also know. Mine are perfectly symmetrical and smooth surfaced.
The air vortex explanation,I highly doubt,BUT the spinning glandes, spraying water droplets out in a circle is a VERY viable explanation, given that they still have a lot of spin after such a long flight, which i can imagine, since they're spinning quite fast initially and have VERY little air resistance.
True, glandes self orient quickly (depends on design also)
And i wouldn't want to sling and be in the impact zone too..that would mean i've slung them perfectly vertically Wink

Jaegoor communicates with us via the only means available to him.   Sometimes it does come out humorously.  350 meters is excellent.  WTG, jlasud!

I have to warn my girlfriend not to sling my pleasure balls, I'm very proud of them and would be very disappointed if they disappear.
Greetings,
Mauro.

sorry for the bad translation.

Unfortunately, I have no other possibility.

Glandes cannot fly on Purely physically as a ball. Their friction is clearly higher.

To I experiment with a lead shot in glass.

Ilya if one shoots Glandes level about the water, one can hear singing them.

Yes, this is a very international site.  You'll get used to Jaegoor's translations.  He is an expert slinger, sling maker, and generally knowledgeable in most medieval technologies.  His input is much appreciated.

Damn translating programmes! Although, don't worry Jaegoor,we can understand what you're typing, and when not,we'll ask again Grin and sometimes your replies are funny too, without your intent.
So your saying that round balls (spheres) as a form are better than the biconical, football shaped glandes? Then i have to disagree..if it was true ,all the birds, fishes, bullets, rockets etc. would look like baloons Grin
I'm curious what kind of balls are you reffering to Smiley Pleasure balls surely can't be slung 350 meters Grin
