I used a Schick Trac2 but I switched to Personna which fit the same handle.  Shower, then shave, the hot water softens your beard and you don't want to lightly abrade your face after it has 24 hours worth of critters growing on it.  If you shave daily, your skin will toughen up, it's when you shave every week or so that you get the irritation.  If you want to really make your face feel like leather, use cold water, you will have to wash your face with a mild soap to soften your beard before shaving.  And one last thing, if your face stings due to sweating, you may want to shave before going to bed.

That doesn't always work, especially if you're exercising very early in the morning.
I was taught to shave before showering because the shower would essentially close up all the little nicks you got from shaving.  Thoughts?

I graduated from the disposable to the safety razor about a year ago. I had, years before traded the cheap jels for shaving soap and brush but it wasn't until I found a 1956 Gillette at a flea market for $9 that I made the complete jump.

I use Shark Super Chrome Double Edge Safety Razor Blades (http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Chrome-Double-Safety-Blades/dp/B003BWQX46 ) because I got them cheap and they work good. Only flaw is that if you do not shave everyday, leaving them wet does a number on the edge.

Shaving before a shower is pure torture for me. What I do is after shaving I turn the water on pure cold and splash my face and neck a few times to tighten things up. For the nicks I use a septic stick.

Being in police work for so many years, I've been clean-shaven save for my mustache.  (a common affectation among coppers!)

Daily, I use a Norelco electric.  I've had the same one for about 30 years now, and have replaced the blades once.  It still works fine.   It's a perfectly "good enough for work" shave.

For "going out" occasions, I use whatever cheap disposable razors I find at the grocery store.  Usually Gillette.   I also use old-fashioned "menthol" shave cream, the kind that comes in the aerosol can.  Never have tried any of the various gels or other concoctions.

If I happen to wang myself, I use a good old-fashioned styptic pencil.

My first razor was a solid brass Gillette "adjustable" razor that took the old "blue blades" that came in the little push-out-one-at-a-time packages.  The razor was heavy enough to shear through flesh by sheer momentum...
A big advance was the stainless steel blades, which did not rust.

I got my first electric while I was in the army, a Remington.  It pulled and stung something fierce.   I tried the Norelco about 70 or so, and never went back.

I've been shaving since I was 13, over 50 years, and have a few opinions. Brush soap is too much work, though I have done that (using my grandfather's shaving mug and brush). Just about any good foam from a can works fine for me, currently using Barbasol, though I have some kind of gel, too. That's a small can, better for traveling. I started out with a Gillette double-edge but those old blades barely lasted one shave, switched to Schick injector which was a little better. done a few other brands over the years. I currently use two different razors, a Gillette Sensor (original type) if I'm home and shaving every day or so, and a Gillette Mach 3 for less-frequent shaving. The Sensor gives the better shave but clogs if the whiskers get too long. The Mach 3 doesn't get as close without too much work but mows down longer whiskers better. If I want a really good shave I use the Mach 3 and follow up with the Sensor, re-lathering between.

Prep is important. I shower first and really soap the beard to degrease and moisturize the whiskers to soften them. Never tried a cold water shave and don't think I want to.

Lastly, blades have improved 1000% since I started. I can get a week's worth out of a Mach 3 easily, two if I put up with a little pulling. And I have a really heavy beard.

I actually shave during my shower - and those of you who have seen me - yes I do shave certain bits Smiley

I use the cheapest 2 blade swivel head safety razors I can find.
Last lot were 12 for £0.79 from aldi Smiley

Sometimes if the throat hair is getting itchy I'll dry shave.

Never had razor burn - so can't help there.

Are you already using a brush and mug? If not, get on it.  You'll thank me later.

I bought a shave kit as a birthday present to myself and... I hate walmart. I never leave there happy or satisfied. The ceramic mug was shattered and the blister pack held it together so that the cracks weren't visible. I've (mostly) superglued it back together, but I think I'll have to upgrade sooner than I planned. undecided

I shave every 2 weeks. My wife knows to buy the cheapest razors available. I'll take a scalding hot bath and shave with soap or shampoo, using the cheapest razor. When i am done, i splash some aftershave on my face and scalp (i shave my head too). Thaqt done, i smear some crocodile oil serum everywhere i've shaved. This stops shavers rash, pimples and what not and keeps my skin from looking like saddle leather.

I really would like to own a genuine cut throat though. It just looks like it gives a great shave, especially for scalps. Anyone of you shave with one???

I use the gillette venus with the built-in olay moisturizing bars on the blade itself.  Really good for sensitive skin.

Anyone shave with fire? Hair is wonderfully flammable, natural oils only make it more flammable. Stinks to high heaven, but it's one darn clean shave.  Grin

No seriously http://www.instructables.com/id/Fire-Shaving/

I first found this out the hard way when I leaned in too close to a sling I was singeing, burned off a tuft of hair.

Grin Greenman I must say I have been looking for a good cut-throat for a while now and nothing.

I must say that I'm really luck, I can shave cold, hot with soap shampoo, even dry ( thats with baby powder ) and I wont get rash.

I have tried the Minora blade and thats just not cool even thou the blade is super sharp it feels blunt on my skin and feels like it rips out the beard instead of shaving it.

The first thing I have to say on this subject is multi blade cartridge razors are terrible.  I think these products are the best example of the power of marketing in existence.

I find a double edge safety razor is always works well.  The key points when shaving are to make sure your facial hair is well soaked before you shave.  A shower, a hot wet cloth, or a lengthy lather all do the job.  WIth a decent shaving brush and shaving soap, this process is a pleasure.  This is probably the most important part of the process, don't rush it!

Always go with the grain, don't put any force into it, let the blade do the work.  Make sure your blade is sharp and replace or sharpen when required (for the price of DE blades I just replace when they start to blunt).

The final part of my routine is to apply baby oil to my face after shaving.  Through these steps I have turned shaving from a dread into a joy.

I also have a straight (cut throat) razor.  I have never managed to sharpen it sufficiently to make it a viable option for shaving.  It's been a while since i tried using it though, maybe have another bash this weekend!

I definitely don't dread shaving anymore. I didn't cut myself at all with my first try at the safety razor and I've only nicked myself once since. It wasn't even enough to cause a scale to form. Cheesy

Glad you're enjoying it. I only cut myself when I'm trying to get too much mileage out of my blades. As long as I change them when they start pulling instead of cutting, I've had no problems.

If I eventually have sons I'll definitely get them a safety razor when they need to begin shaving.
