Possibly a torpedo shaped shaft or a slightly longer shaft would correct this?

A longer shaft would not change the balance point, it would still be in the middle. That dart flew perfectly well when launched with an amentum but it just doesnt suit the cestros sling.

This release really has had me thinking, and I've been carrying one since the beginning of this thread.  In some respects,  I consider it to be as versatile as a classic sling... it can hold a lot of things that an average EDC sling would be unable to pouch.  You can easily deliver a bottle should you find the need to do such a thing *cough cough*.  I've been having a blast chucking new things that I never before considered as ammunition.

Is that a pencil for the peg?  Grin
I have been throwing water bottles... after they are empty, fill them with creekwater and throw!

Back then i also made a few cestros. Couple of days ago chucked them again. The heads are ~ 4" long thick walled 1/2" iron pipe hammered together to a point. Short darts bout foot long with a bit of fuzzy thread on the end of the shafts as fins. Like a bowstring silencer pom-pom.
And those fly straight instantly,as they have their balance point about 20% from the front,so really front heavy.
That matters much more than the fins. Also they weight about 4 oz.

After learning that some people is still interested in this stuff I decided to make a new video with a somewhat better wiev.  The morning light is a bit bad but I had to make the video early before someone came to play soccer in the nice weather.

Very fly!
I have also planned a slightly different Cestrosphendone.

Nice vid!

I have been quite nervous when figure-8'ing some of my more brutal darts.

Thanks.

Timpa, I look forward to your take on this weapon.

As an experienced expert I feel as safe as can be expected while foolig around with this toy Shocked

Personally I have never felt comfortable trying to hurl a dart any other way than with figure 8.  I have tried to swing it around other ways but it has always felt wrong.  I expect to se timpa doing it using his pirouette in a video soon, though.

Great job all! In the interest of furthering my (our) limited work with the notorious kestros, how about some close-up videos of rigging it? I would like to see both methods, the tail release and the cradle release.

Also the water bottle rig would be great too! Wouldn't want to get hit by a water bottle!

Is there a video of the world record Engvall throw anywhere? I would like to see his release as well...

I learned how to tie and use the dart sling from David Morningstar, we should bring that thread back up...

I`m not able to get good range, but that`s because I`m seriously distance inhibited in all sorts of throwing.  In my video I`m in no danger of reaching across to the other side of the soccer field.

The arrows are already in place. Now I just have to find the time to throw. Smiley

And...
When loaded the distance between the dart and the release knot is around 105 cm/41"
