I wonder if it had a rat tail tang that broke off from age? Certaintately Jim Bowie wasn't the first one to invent the sharpened clip point, he just popularized it.

Thanks for your kindness, I'm glad to share my interests here.
The first time I found an ancient object - it was the piece of a Late Roman brick! - I imagined the very same things: who took the clay, who modeled the brick, who cooked it, who used it to build a wall, who lived inside these walls, for how long, who died inside that house, when did they abandon the house, what happened next, why did the house collapse, and how many hours did this fragment pass under the ground... it always amazes me to think how many people lived on Earth before me... they're just shadows now and what's left of their lives are these tiny fragments of history...

By the way I can't remember how sharp it was, but judging by the picture I assume it was a cool little blade for eating and doing little more. Judging by wearing, it must have been a good steel too! Nice, one observation is that it has quite a curve, is short for its width has a very slowly tapering point. This suggests to me it is for skinning as modern skinning knives tend to have a blade edge much like that, the slow tapering point would be for easier penetration to start your cut. I could be wrong but it looks a lot like a skinner to me.

When bk said "upper, curved false edge"he meant the edge on the bottom of the picture. The crescent shape made by cutting the clip out of the spine of the knife is either called a swedge or a false edge. Swedges are sharpened like the edge of the blade, false edges are not.

Defintely a more specialised blade than a bowie.
