Concrete greetings from the Czech Republic
May 21st, 2012, 1:16pm

Hi all of you who would ever read this post. Originally the game Rome Total War renewed my interrest in the ancient armies and the Rhodian slingers unit brought me to the idea of having a try a month ago. After a few days of training and trying i finally stopped to be an imminent threat to myself and my neighborhood. Then I slowly managed to get from, say 50-80 m distances to my personal record with stones around 170m and average throws 150-160m. My wife and relatives look a bit strangely at me but they are somehow settling down. Just behind my house I have got a humble slinging range  bordering with a park so if I heard the stone hit branches or ripping leaves I know the minimum achieved distance. But people somehow go through it so Iīll have to adjust my azimuth to the fields without knowing the range Sad  Anyway, concrete bullets are great !! Here are some vids:

My favourite style is figure 8 which I started with and now I am mixing it with a kind of sidearm.
I have alredy added my pin to the members map. Looking forward to some neighbors Smiley

Thanks for a warm welcome ( quoting Mr. Beanīs sketch). Yesterday i reached 190m with small pebbles (cca 30-40g) and concrete bullets at a pond. It was measured according to the bushes on the bank so maybe it could have been more but iīd rather stick to more skeptical numbers. I also tried 27g fishing weights. They surely went over 200. I could  sometimes just hear them to hit the water but I was unable to see the circles due to the waves on the surface. Hereīs the map.

Hello and welcome.  I've got to ask, how did you throw the flaming one?

To Bill Skinner : Itīs just 5cm fuse duct taped to a stone and lit from a candle that is not visible on the video as I wanted to shot the high trajectory with the camera. And I threw it as any usual stone - figure 8. And if stopped properly (playing in HD), there is a nice flame spiral wnen the stone was just leaving the craddle. It shows how fast the rotation is. (I guess hundreds per minute depending on the stone).
To Dan : Thanx. It came to my mind when I was thinking about pyrotechnics Smiley

Hello Z-dude, I greet you from the Caribbean! If you wanna try something "free" and easy to make, try clay shots. It's not entirely free because you gotta find your source and then clean it up and such...it can be a pain for me sometimes, but my source is pretty good looking! Anyway, welcome and enjoy your stay. If you want cake, ask Mauro for it.  Grin

Sounds like you're getting some good distance  Smiley
If the fishing weight was glande shaped then you probably got way over 200 metres !

liked the fuse shot too.

Isn't yurek somewhere in the czech republic ?

If hes close to you would be well worth hooking up - most of us could learn something about distance slinging from yurek Smiley

The fishing weights were ball shaped. I could see them letīs say just half of its flight.
But sometimes my hand hurts so I must save it as I was trying to get the longest distance asap. It is a sport as any other (well not so much - i can feel that i may be somehow special because i can do something that probably only tens of people in this republic are able to .(and maybe fewer)  Cool  )  so hands must be warmed up before trying to throw farther.
Yurekīs name sounds like being 99% polish so he can be almost a neighbor Smiley ( in hundreds of kilometers). But he could be near the borders so it could be managable.

And iīve got an apprentice but i must not become too proud  Wink

The distance is not achieveable every day. For example today i could not reach over 160 but the ammo was bad. Itīs time to dip my hands into concrete again.

I hope, that if I make a longer sling the range will rise again. Beause now the limit is likely to be around just over 200m. My current sling is 75cm long so there sahll be some reserve.

Thank you Rat Man. These distances are without any witnesses Smiley  Now my hand hes been resting for 4 days as I realised how demanding for elbow slinging is. It had been sending warning signs for several days so I decided to quit for a week. Itīs getting much better but it shows me how important exercise to warm the body is. Any of those who will ever read this :   Donīt underestimate it  and donīt try to reach the maximum range ASAP without previous exercise!!! Iīll start agagin in 3-4 days. In the meantime Iīm rolling out concrete bullets and thinking about the way how to industialize it Smiley   Maybe the fórm for ice? (the ping pong balls seem too big and heavy for higher distances I tried it and itīs too demanding for the exact moisture.

I'm 57 and one thing I know for sure.  The older you get the more important warming up prior to slinging or any other exercise is.  Once you reach a certain age it's essential.

I agree with you Rat Man. Iīm just 33 but I can feel it. Anyway, yesterday I slung a bit over 200m !!!  Cool
Maybe 210. The sling was the same - 75cm long and the stones and concrete balls weighted 40-60 grams. Uff. It was a hard labor. Tongue  Some stones flew over and dindīt even splash.

The throws were done here :  http://mapy.cz/#x=14.540524&y=50.284541&z=16&t=r&l=15&rp=m&a mp;m=9hS.qxZDTZOGfQ6

So, after a while and some persuading myself I decided to braid. Before it I had been a bit afraid that itīs too difficult. Itīis sooo easy like having to sling a hundred of nice pebbles. I decided for jute and three bridind following the Dan Bollingerīs guide. It turned out to be a bit shorter (just 50cm folded) than i had expected but it doesnīt matter as I have already caught the idea. Before this one I had 4 slings three of which ruptured their pouches because of the too thin leather used.  Hereīs the picture. The lowest sling is the last accident (85 cm folded), the middle one is my favorised "hard laborer" (only the green plastic bead, that helped me to increase the distance more than twice, sometimes cracks when hit with a large stone or hard surface) and the upper one is my " masterpiece".

Now my standart range is somewhere around 170-180m but with heavier stones than before. I have already reached 200m twice.

So cu next time
