Best type for a first woven sling???
May 19th, 2012, 5:14pm

OK. So i live less a km away from a company that makes paracord and any other kind of cordage and rope. The owner even once gave me a tour through their hallowed manufacturing plant...

Slingers would think they died and went to sling cord heaven. 50 machines churning out everything from 16 strand woven polyester to paracord and anything in between. Pallets stacked to the roof with rope, twine and cord.... Magical.

I would like to try my hand at weaving slings for a hobby (passion, obsession) and would like to know:

What would be the best (simplest) type of sling to make as a first woven sling?? I think i will be using standard paracord.

I'm looking for something that will be relatively easy. If there is a tutorial on YouTube, I would appreciate a link.

Thanks Slingers!!!

I'd go with a three strand sheep shank sling if it has to be easy to make and also woven of paracord. google "site:slinging.org ts3" for pictures. Peacefuljeffrey slings are one step up in difficulty, but there's a tutorial on the main page. There's also the cobra sling, which is almost a combination of the two, with a wide section and a narrow section of the pouch. Those are the only 3 woven slings I know of that could use synthetic materials. Any other woven design would require you to pull apart the paracord and would make for a slippery pouch.

Ditto Masi. If you can get thin mason's line or 3mm thick nylon cord/twine, you can give a try at a rockman sling. That would also require braiding knowledge, but it's worth it.

I second the 3mm braided cord.  I have made several slings from it, they are slightly stiffer than a single cord or a natural fiber sling and take a little getting used to.  They loosen up in time and are almost indestructable.  When you weave the pouch, make sure you pack it really tight, if you don't, as you use the sling, the weaving will compact on the release cord side and you will start to have stones slip through the center of the split pouch designs.  I haven't had a problem with this with a PJ sling but I did have to add another section of weaving afer a year or so of slinging tennis balls for my dog.  I also used 6mm braided nylon for the cord for the 5 strand sheepshank.

If you are using standard paracord, then I highly recommend gutting either the weft strands or the cord in the whole sling.  Gutted paracord is more limp in the attachment cords, and flatter when weaving the pouch.  This makes the pouch lighter (less resistance to motion) and more flexible (better grip on your ammo).

Others' experience may vary, but I've found my slings with gutted cord to be faster in rotation, cleaner on the release, and more accurate overall.

By not gutting the cord you can cut down on the compression problem that Bill's talking about. Other than that I've noticed very little difference between gutted and non.

Yep, Masiakasaurus and kid are right, the easiest woven sling is the TS3.  Simply make an Appu-sling
http://slinging.org/index.php?page=making-a-simple-string-sling-an-illustrated-g uide---malik-lund
then weave it.  Make sure you pull the strands (warp, not weft) hard as you weave so that when you're finished the pouch has a "U" shape to it.  I've found that without the "U" shape the TS3 might sometimes prematurely drop your projectiles.  With the "U" it's one of the best slings that there is.

Love the look of the TS3.

I'll make one for my first woven sling. Then a PJ and then all the others. I do African wire weaving, so i have good experience weaving to get a uniform tension.

I can't wait. My fingers are already twitching in anticipation.

Thank you Slingers!! Keep it coming.
