Another thought on "good" modern combat knives;
Do we still use knives in modern combat?
If I'm going to get close enough to my enemy that I could use a knife, I'm going to want a bigger knife.
Call it the "Rambo Effect" or the "Mick Dundee Principle"
but
if I can't do an Indiana Jones on their ass then I want mine to be bigger than theirs.

The handle on my cold steel kukri machete is loose,  idk maybe i abused it too much,  I guess its better for brush clearing than actual hard chopping.

Copy that, Little.
Machetes are for living brush, not hard chopping.
For chopping, even a small hatchet is better than a machete but one does what one must do.
Cold Steel should replace yours. I would If I had made it.

Yeah, most of their machetes aren't anything extrodinary. If you want to stop the handle rattleing, insert some e-poxy or cold weld into the handle. I'v had to do it once because I way over abused one of my CS knives.

Chuck rocks, the best combat knife is the one you have with you. I've read some post from military on the CS forum and they say how something between a kukri and a large bowie knife is best for fighting, but it's more likely you'll have a medium sized fixed blade and a tactical folder. Or even just a folder for that matter. In Cold Steel's Solid Proof, they have a soldier give a testimony as to how the CS Hamato (small tactical folder) saved his life in the middle east and that he actually used it to take a guy out. Does this happen often? I doubt it. But it's a good thing to keep in mind.

Well said Dan, It is always the knife you have with you.
But a big heavy knife would have gotten me killed. A short light and extremly sharp skinner has served me well.
(homemade example attached)

From experiance, NOT training:
1) Any knife is better than no knife.
2) A small sharp knife is better than a large dull knife.
3) If you absolutely have to fight with even odds, face to face, a buddy with a gun beats the hell out of everything else.

Also from experiance:
The roll of an edged weapon in combat should be one of complete stealth (ie: wet work) where you have the advantage to avoid a fight.
If you think of taking a knife with you because you'll be going through a badass part of town, then choose another route.
Avoid knife fights, they will change you; your face, your wallet, your sex, the way you look at football, your life, everything.

I think it's a good idea to have a knife just in case. Under normal circumstanses, I can either talk my way out of it or defend myself with my hands. However in the case that a naked pcp junkie is attempting to eat my face, I'd like to have my knife with me. I've also read a lot of knife SD stories, and in every one, as soon as the defendant pulled out the knife, the assailent ran away. Attackers are looking for victimes, not for people with large knives and that know how to use it. Plus I can use it as a tool most of the time.

If I go to a bad part of town, I will bring my knife, not with the intention of being in a 'duel' but just to convince them I am not a victim (I normally don't look 'victimy' anyway but just in case someone needs more convincing). A bad car accident can do almost all the things that you listed for the knife fight too, I know the risk, but it's still better than the other guy (say a child mollester or a rapist) having a knife and me not having one.

It's better to have it and not need it, than to really need it and not have it.

Sorry for the rant, I stand strong by carrying a knife for possible SD. And if you go to the Cold Steel forum, you'll find dozens of guys clothed and in their right mind, that will carry a blade for self defence.

10-4 what you just said, Dan.
I agree.
Note please, that I wasn't arguing against taking a knife into Bedford Sty, just against going at all. If you gotta go, then at least take a knife.

For me, I'll take the knife in the photo below, er~ if I can find it.

Having a big knife strapped to you was pretty usefull as a psych weapon when I was in Iraq (2007).  Case in point- you could point your M4 at someone's face- and they would ignore it.  Pull your pistol- they would run like hell.  Why?  Everyone has a rifle (usually an AK-47)- they shoot them for display- they have no training or maintenance, so they don't do much, and they don't believe you can, either.  Saddam's executioners, however- always used a pistol!  Pistols were feared, and the man holding one- was obeyed.  In crowd/protest problems- this helped alot.  Put your hand on your knife- and they started remembering all the stories about American soldiers being "butchers", and all the stories about Saddam's torture-chambers.  Just wearing a knife while holding a pistol made the locals believe you would kill- and they would get out of your way.  I Heard of more than a few hand-to-hand kills because of crowd-control and house-search missions, too.
In Afghanistan- no real attention was payed to you, no matter what you carried (except snipers)- everyone grows up around every kind of weapon- so they don't take much notice- they do admire marksmanship more than the Iraqis, though.
