What are some good "modern" combat knives

In the dark days of WW2 they had some pretty reliable combat/utility knives, some knives from home some issued, and some bought. But what are some of the best knives of today, (not rat tail tang knives(tend to snap near the handle) like the ka-bar etc) juss really reliable ones. Take your pick what you think are the best for disasters/bug out situations/armed conflicts etc..times are gettin scary these days whether you believe it or not up to you Wink

Anything by Randall Made Knives in Orlando Florida is a work of art. They have been making fighting knives since WW2. John Ek Knives are also well respected. Swamp Fox knives is the company that made the knives for "The Patriot" and "The Alamo" movies. They make great repros of old style knives.

They have been making knives for various government contracts for along time and they do a decent job. That said, if you're gonna put your life on the line, get the best you can afford.

IME a knife is a knife, not an axe. Knives are for knife chores and fighting, chopping wood shouldn't really be a requirement. I just bought the RAT 5 which I am pretty pleased with. For a sole combat knife, cold steel makes some good knives. I have the recon tanto in aus 8 and sai mai III and I am pleased with both of them, but obviously the Sai Mai is much nicer.

K Bar has been in use since WWII and hasn't changed since. The "rat tail" is 1/2 inch wide (12mm), which is as wide as the blade on a lot of knives. How did you manage to break one?

FX, that looks like a just about perfect general, all purpose, knife. Not too big, not too small, good shape to the blade, it looks great. What does the sheath look like? I have seen lots of great knives in poor sheaths, they don't hold the blade, they let the blade cut through, the mounting points are flimsy and let the knife get torn off in brush and so on. Most people look just at the knife, they need to pay just as much attention to the sheath.

Hi Bill,

the sheath for ESSE 4 is verry good and made of Kydex. On this you can mount a Tec-lock or e flexible Molle-Back like here:

I use the new Teck-lock-System and carry it cross on my back.

But attention, the sheaths of the ESSE 3 ore RAT 3 are made of Zytel an verry poor, but you get good made of Kytex on Ebay for small money.

I prefer handmade, fixed blade knives for survival and combat. Better than the mass-produced crap i have found in recent times.

I like the Puuko91...

I have some 6mm / 1/4" springsteel blades and when the time comes, i will ask Stuart, the knife smith, to make me some Puuko's for me, my wife and my dauthers. A matching set.

He heats the metal to remove the "spring", shapes (i will ask for full tangs to strengthen the overall and improve balance), drills, and sharpens the blades. Then returns the "spring" to the blade and finishes it in your choice of handle.

Imagine a hand-crafted 6mm, 1/4" thick, spring-steel blade on a custom made knife.

Excellent for carving or crafting wood or sticking into the neck or renal vein/artery of the enemy... Depending on choice of your attack.

If i had to choose an edged weapon to take to war, i would choose a "Marbles Scout Master" Machete.

I have read and seen videos of people breaking their ka-bars, although most likely it can be user error using a knife that size for heavy work. And some people say the quality has gone down, like maybe they were tougher back then then today idk.

Well personally I dont like it when people baton with their knives but idk seems stupid to me but it works with the right knives.
