There probably is already a thread like this but considering we got some new members, what are your favourite movies? I'm a big fan of movies, I love Adventure, Fantasy And Sci Fi films, I can spend a whole day watching movies

Some of my favourites are,

Contact (1997), this is one of my all time favourites.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Alien Series and the Predator series
Avatar (2009)
Forrest Gump (1994)

And you can keep going, I have a whole list of movies I like.

So what are your favourite movies?

There have been many such threads but we always have new people so it's fine.  My favorite movies are The Wizard of Oz, believe it or not, and Apocalypse Now.  Mel Gibson's Apocalypto gets honorable mention.  If you haven't seen it yet, it's a very wild flick set in pre-Colombian Central America.  The action is insane and almost non stop plus a wonderful array of ancient weapons is used throughout.  See it.

I've seen it, and I still wonder what's the intent of that movie.
I mean, we have a hero, a nice plot, wonderful scenery and action, but every time I watch it it leave me with the strange feeling that something's missing...  Huh
What I think when it ends is: "Who care about that guy's adventures?"...... but I like the movie after all, a lot of nice weapons there  Wink

Oh, and talking about ancient weapons, did you know that Braveheart's weapons were made by an Italian artisan? His name's Del Tin and if you google "spade Del Tin" you'll find nice pictures of his swords!
Greetings,
Mauro.

I grew up watching a lot of classic movies that were all pretty good. Top new-ish favorites would probably be: Red Dawn, The Patriot, Taken, and The Hunger Games. Favorite Christmas movie would probably be Die Hard.
And I saw the Avengers last night which was pretty good.

I think I've watched all of the films that always make the critic's "best ever" lists.  Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane... You know... The "great films".

However, though I clearly recognize these as great films, most of 'em don't count as my favorites.

Just off the top of my head...

Moby Dick  (the Gregory Peck version)
Alien-Aliens-
High Noon
Conan
Blade Runner
Terminator
And of course the three LOTR films.

Lately, I've been very fond of Sucker Punch.  On the surface, a chicks-with-guns film.  But look a bit deeper and it's a very complex little film that's very well done.

Mauro - I'm right with you with the spaghetti westerns.  A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly are awesome, but I think For a Few Dollars More is my favorite.  Lee van Cleef is just classic in that role, and Clint is Clint, so you can't go wrong with that.

As to my favorite movies, I don't think I could make a list, as I like so many from so many different genres.  I think my favorite really depends on my mood and that changes all the time.

Those spaghetti westerns are sort of surreal to me. It starts with the background music, I think. No connection to the Wild West or even America generally. There was also a lack of artistic agreement between Leone and Eastwood: Leone said Clint had two emotions: with his hat on and with it off. He simply didn't get the strong, silent character the typical western hero embodied. I personally liked Eastwood's later westerns under his own production company, especially Josey Wales.

The Van Cleef character Angel Eyes was a delicious villain, wasn't he? In comparison Eli Wallach's Tuco was a hyperactive buffoon.

It's been noted before that Fistful was a remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo.

My own favorite movies include Tampopo and Chinatown and a "fistful", of Kurosawa films esopecially Seven Samurai, Dodes'ka Den and A Stray Dog. The old Brit film Genevieve was a hoot, too.

lol hated sucker punch.

I guess I would define a favourite movie as one I can watch every time it's on.

so off the top of my head a short list:

men in black (first film only)
shrek (same deal - 1 is a classic 2&3 so-so - not seen 4 yet)
hudson hawk - never understood the critics panning it - awesome feel good film
any of the alien films except 3 (the one in the prison - rubbish film)
first predator film - what can I say, attractive women in jumpsuits are hot Smiley
both the blues brothers films
whoops apocalypse - it's a british comedy film - the scene where the sas attack madam tussauds wax works museum and take casualites, makes me laugh so hard it hurts.

wings of desire. - peter falk plays a man who used to be an angel. Just a brilliant film - not one with mass appeal though.

the thing - probably the best sf/horror film ever made. before digital effects took the skill out of monsters. Everything you see on screen was actually there. Probably the best special effects work ever done, by anyone, ever.
john carpenters - Vampires
In fact pretty much any john carpenter film (yep even the mars one).

and  bunch of others that don't spring quite so readily to mind.
