I have stayed out of this discussion till now because I carry a firearm. Zimmerman was licensed to carry a firearm so at least there was some background check done on him by local PD before permit was issued. The problem arises because Zimmerman did not stand down when told to by the police dispatcher. This, by any interpretation of the law, makes him the aggressor. In New York there is no " Stand Your Ground Law". You are obliged to retreat/ remove yourself from a situation if at all possible, and be under physical attack and in fear of your life before you can contemplate shooting someone.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Sorry if I misinterprated the situation. I didn't mean to take it too far, the only thing I do know is that it can be interprated many ways. In any interpration errors were made, however the media is blowing this up far greater than it should be and leaning towards the 'guns are evil' view. This is bad, and this paticular case isn't something worth argueing over because it's such an obscure situation.

oh but Dan, if we didn't legislate based on the extreme cases and popular opinion, we might have measured thoughtful responses to things! Surely you can see how silly that would be  Roll Eyes Grin

A lot of groups are trying to use and twist this to their propaganda advantage.  You've got the anti-gun lobby, both black and white racists, the anti-stand your ground lobby, etc. etc..  The news reporting is very biased and inflammatory... and irresponsible.  There is a possible worst case scenario that no sane person wants to occur.

Within a couple of days of the story breaking nationally, CNN was staging "reinactments" of the incident based on nothing but here say and rumor.    Seriously bad reporting of this all 'round.

Which unfortunately seems to be more and more the norm these days.
