Risks in sending knives oversea? (Read 391 times)

I have two knives to send to the US, and would like to know: is there any lawful trouble in sending them? They are forged iron, and sharpened; they are weapons and I wish they were not blocked at customs. And if they were, would there be risks for me or the recipient? Thanks, Mauro.

Nope, the blades are fixed on a wooden handle; the whole knives measure about 20-25 centimeters each (7.8 - 9.8 inches), and the longer blade is about 4.7 inches long.
Recipients are in New York and Alabama (and now I've ruined the surprise

).
I could unsharp these blades, but I don't know if this would be of some use.... Roll Eyes

I can't see there would be much of a problem. Customs will probably not care, but it is probably best not to call it a weapon. Declare it as a 'replica' in case they think you are importing genuine ancient artifacts, which they are supposed to stop, I believe.

Knives fully sharpened are sold and mailed within the U.S. all the time. Make sure it is well packed, so the mail carrier doesn't get a nasty surprise, but not so well packed that Customs can't get at it if they really want to

In any rate I don't think anything would ever come back to you as far as legal troubles.

Say it's for historical research purposes, show them your doctorate/laurea (spelling?) and smile. The US is pretty lax on fixed blade ownership.

Reply #6 - Apr 29^th, 2012, 1:50pm the United States Postal Service has no problem shipping knives (switchblades and ballistic knives excluded) inside the 50 states. I don't know if international standards would be problematic but I've received (from distributors) and shipped (as presents) knives with no problems.

there is no problem sending anything to the states.
Just put childs toy on the customs label.
I find that it never pays to list the ACTUAL contents of a parcel on the shipping label.
Don't give the customs officers an excuse to look and they won't bother.

I've even managed to sneak meat and vegetation into california

My two favourite listings are: confectionery (candy) and Child's toy.

I find that covers almost everything I tend to ship around the world.

Or imported butterfly knives, such a stupid law...

Then again 95% of weapon laws are just made up with almost no sound reasoning at all so the government drones can have something to do and keep taking in taxes. Angry

Reply #11 - Apr 30^th, 2012, 2:30am Customs seized some of my switchblades from Italy and I had to forfeit the property, or face US attorney. Now I have had success when certain things are labeled "sample aluminum rods." FedEx is more successful too. FYI... I am not suggesting do any thing illegal.
