Survival game
Apr 26th, 2012 at 5:30pm

Somehow you have been abducted by an evil eccentric billionaire and placed on a tropical island. You have no weapons and you must hunt for food as well as defend yourself from roving bands of thieves and cannibals. What weapons do you make first and what is your strategy for surviving. The tropical island is pretty lush with vegetation and you can imagine whatever kind of critters you want inhabit this island.

Edit: I forgot to mention you are naked.

I'm assuming that you're somewhat on the run or at least moving to avoid the roving bands of bad guys. First weapon would be a club because it's going to be the easiest to make when you're naked and without any tools and have just been dropped onto an island. Gathering materials as you move and making cordage while on the run would be another significant priority. Scouting creek bottoms and shoreline would hopefully begin to yield something hard like stone or shell so you can make tools for cutting, scraping and chipping. With basic hand tools and something you've woven to begin carrying things you'd be somewhat on your way to making it.

An equally important thread to this is after you have a club, you hunt someone down and take their weapons and gear. Being an opportunist would be a key to making it.

Absolutely! Pick them off one at a time when possible. Take their stuff, and evade.

I would first make sime kind of pant like structure out of large thick leaves.  I'd then cover the rest of my body with mud to help me blend in more. Then I'd construct a Yeti Suit. This can be done by folding a branch in half like a snowshoe and weaving vegatation through the suit. Then I'd some how bait them in just before dark and take out one of the guards (probably by crushing his trachea or skull with a club or rock or after tackling the guad take his wepon and kill him with it, or maybe double eye gouge then tearing out the neck with my teeth  Wink depends on the guard and the circumstances I guess) my size and then take his clothes and weapon. From here the process is pretty simple and you just eliminate the rest of the threats, fully clothed.

I am pretty good with my hands, both for fighting and construction so I'd probably rely more on taking out the guards than Robinson Crusoe-ing it.

Fun thread.

I think I'd cover myself in mud until clothes are available.  First weapon would be a fire-hardened spear/javelin a la schoningen.  I can make one using only a rock and a dead piece of driftwood in about an hour, provided I have a fire started already.  Since this is a jungle type environment, I'd have a fire with a fire saw and some natural fiber for tinder.  Piece of cake, then schoningen spear/javelin.

This sounds like one of my scenarios.  The very first weapon I'd make is a nice, thick bamboo staff.  Once I had that in my hands I'd find some rocks to bash together to make a quick knife and cut a sharp point on one end of my staff making it a combination thrusting spear/head bashing staff.  Next I'd throw together an emergency sling with some vines.  Clothes I wouldn't be that concerned with since this is a tropical island, but I'd probably spread mud over myself for camouflage and some protection from sun and biting insects.
I'd wait for nightfall and, like Dan,  try to sneak up on and take out one of the guards, as silently as possible.  I'd probably try to garrote one with a vine.  Hopefully he'd be near my size so his shoes and clothes could be useful to me.  Of course I'd also confiscate what ever weapons he had.  I'd do my best to stay as inactive as possible during the day and strike when possible at night.  One thing you learn in the army is how to become invisible, and that's for real.
Now here's one of those questions... some of the people after you are cannibals.  If you're unable to find any food and you're starving, if you do happen to take out one of them do you cut yourself off some cannibal meat or just leave the body there?  You're fighting for your life here so anything goes, but how far would you take it?

RatMan. I'd take it all day, all the way. Taking some enemy meat was originally on my list but I deleted it thinking it might be too extreme. Since you let the cat out I'll say that I'd at least take the backstraps for starters. Hopefully it wouldn't have to be a habit.

I'd have to be pretty damn hungry (like brink of death) to do that, but you probably would want to hide the body somehow...

Good replies though. I never would have thought about using mud for camo.

Yes, the whole idea of grease paint as camouflage is to reverse your highlighting to disguise your contours.  In other words you'd apply light paint to the dark, shadowed areas and dark paint where you're highlighted.  Mud can be used in the same way.  Then lash some small, leafy branches to your head and body to break up your outline, stay low and in the shadows, only move when necessary, and you're good to go.
As far as eating cannibals, "Meat's meat and man's gotta eat."  (from Motel Hell)  If I was starving and they were trying to eat me, I'd have me some cannibal burger in a second.  Would it bother me?  Some, but under the circumstances probably not as much as you'd expect.

I wouldn't eat another person, not from taboo, but because I'd be worried about getting a form of spongiform encephalitis (mad cow disease) which is prevalent in cannibalistic societies.

Finaly, someone else that won't eat people.  Grin

Again, once I take out the first Guard it's pretty simple and I'd either gain the favor of the cannibals and get them to fight with me, or just kill them all depending on how many there are and if there are women and children.

I'd definitely do my best to take out all of the hostile theives (again assuming they are adult males), and just survive with their stuff.

then don't eat the brain or the spinal cord. Everything else is just tasty meat Smiley
Cannibals eat the brains as a way of absorbing the victims powers. it's the brain and spinal cord that carries the virions that cause cjd.

No other part of the body causes any risk whatsoever Smiley
Thigh would be pretty good.
You can keep the prairie oysters though  Wink

The first thing I would make is some footwear. bark and vines would furnish sandals and after that you can concentrate on weapons.
But being able to walk on all the insects and thorns and stones and spiny bits of twig without crippling yourself is definitely task No 1
