I would make it with a "V" cross section, tapering into a grip.  The striking edge is the point of the "V".  The point would be shaped like the front of a boat.  It looks like the back has a knot  or a hump left on for extra weight.  You may want to look up "atassa" or "atassi" which are southeastern US wooden war clubs that were in use until the early 19th century.

Bill's right, and I think that any branch of hard wood will work nicely too  Wink
It's just a club after all.
Greetings,
Mauro.

For the type of wood, I think some type of white oak, red oak, ash or any dense hardwood would work best.  I think I would make a couple of test models of soft wood first and see how they turned out before I started working the harder woods.  You may want to change something in the later models.

No, he means that you should carve one side of a straight branch so that the club will have a triangular or V shaped cross section.

This really opens up another line of thought here. Bishop Odo's club was designed to get the job done without spilling blood...being a Bishop and all...i think he was prohibited from drawing blood. Nevertheless...he could knock folks out of commission with a simple club and still reamain within bounds of acceptable behavior. It's a very interesting concept to explore philosophically...killing and maiming without drawing blood, and all within the confines of social norms. It's a very interesting subject of study.

The Mongols executed royalty by wrapping them in felt rugs and would then ride horses on the rugs. Thus no blood was spilt.

The stick has many versions across Europe. Bata, shillelagh, etc.

Look up "Doyle Irish stick fighting" for an interesting style.

Or just read the Malleus Maleficarum: Inquisitor's torture machines were rarely designed to spill blood, except for later ones.
Greetings,

This is really an interestig topic. the fact that clergy could participate in battle as long as they wouldn't shed blood. Think about it for awhile...a combative clergyman that coult kill you without shedding any bloood in th proces. He would just bludgeon you to death.

It was my understanding that Odo's club was more of a swagger stick than an actual weapon. Odo, being both second in command to William the Conquerer and an ordained bishop, was more inclined to lead from the rear than to fight alongside his men. I imagine his thinking was, "You can't take credit for a victory or reap the spoils of war if you've been killed in the fighting."

Leading from the rear is like trying to push string.

The original Bayeux tapestry where Duke Wilhelm is leading his soldiers (from the rear, it seem) can be seen here (scroll down the page):

and there're some other Medieval maces as well.
Greetings,
Mauro.
