Pouch Style
Apr 23rd, 2012, 9:58am

So when I first came to slinging.org I made a netted sling as my first sling. Why would I undertake such a tedious project? 1. I'm not that smart and tend to bite off more than I should. 2. It made sense to me to have a pouch that cupped the ammo. Having no experience it made sense to me that a cupped pouch would be less likely to drop the stone. Now I'm no longer sure so I thought I'd open it up and see what people prefer and why.

I prefer a very slightly cupped pouch. I actually haven't had any deep cupped pouches yet, but I'm afraid they wouldn't release as well as something with just enough of a cup to keep the ammo in.

no contest cupped.
stops ammo going out sideways or backwards. Will hold larger variety of ammo.
And is just as easy to make as a flat pouch.

Ditto to all the above. I have always used cupped pouches as they hold the stone much more securely.

I have never used any other pouch than flat.

When I drop the pouch at the first part of the fig-8 I try to just drop it as opposed to adding speed to it. Because of this I pretty much have to use a cupped leather pouch or the ammo falls out, as there is little centrifugal force to keep it in. My experience with flat pouches is comical at best. Even if I used a different throwing style I would still use a slightly cupped pouch.

I'm all about the cupped leather pouch.  Ammo retention to be sure.  I like to cut and fold my pouches so they produce a "tensioned" cup as opposed to a stretched out wet-formed one.  My leather is a bit heavier than most and my pouches are designed to wear in not wear out.  Synthetic cords with a heavy cupped pouch will last a long time.  You can see the ones in the attached pic are made from 3"X6" heavy latigo 5-7 oz.  split on the ends and folded to form the cup.  This is what I make pretty much exclusively now.

I prefer a flat pouch, but a cupped pouch does make slinging easier.

Well, I am not sure what a balearic sling is, but that's my preference. Any kind of slight cupping is ideal and greatly increases my faith in the safety of my throw.

I voted cupped but with reservation. It depends a lot on the ammunition you use. If you use natural stones that are always rough and irregular then a flat pouch is quite adequate. In fact it is possible to sling smooth spherical ammo like golf balls from a flat pouch if you position it very carefully. However, generally it is preferable for a pouch to have some degree of cupping for balls. Just make sure that the pouch doesn't grip whatever ammunition you use so tightly that it snags on release.

As cupped as possible while holding the stone.

As flat as possible upon release.

You've encapsulated the paradox of the ideal sling.

And that's my main point of contention. I like the idea of a cupped pouch, and I guess a rockman sling is slightly cupped, but my netted slings simply can't handle the rough stones I have access to in this area.  So I wind up using the rockman. And the sling I got from pikaru in the last SITH had a flat woven pouch and it functions incredibly well. So the flat pouch worked better than I thought it would.

I like split pouches, but if I do go with a whole I generally cup it. I think it adds a bit of usability that a flat pouch might not have. However, since I mostly sling stones I don't really find a major difference. Plus a nicely cupped pouch is slightly more aesthetically appealing in my opinion.

I voted cupped.  I have flat pouched slings that I like but I prefer cupped pouches because they're easier.  If your form is perfect then it shouldn't matter but no one is perfect all of the time.  Cupping hedges your bet.
