First Peruvian Sling
Apr 19th, 2012, 1:23am

Someone asked that I post pictures when I finished my first Peruvian sling.  I just couldn't go to bed tonight until I finished it.  It has taken me quite a while (though when I first attempted to make a Peruvian sling months ago, I was convinced I would never actually have the tenacity to finish one).  I made it out of wool, using a four-strand round braid for the finger loop and then a kumiloom to do a sixteen strand spiral-pattern braid for the cords.  I chose black and white as they're my two favorite not-colors.  I decided to add a splash of color with bright red for the pouch.  The pouch gave me fits.  The first half went very well and then the second half absolutely didn't.  I had a couple of lines crossed and down at the bottom this made weaving practically impossible.  But I caught it too late to start over, so it just gets sloppy at the very end.  I also had yarn breakages because I was using a very wispy sort of "peruvian" yarn which I probably wouldn't choose again.  So, I had to tie in new strands, which left little knots.  The result is a sort of oblong, ugly side to the pouch, and a pretty okay other side.  If I ever do another one of these, it's going to be after a long break.  It just seems like a huge amount of extra effort over a four-strand round braided rockman with not very much extra result.  The cords of the sling are extremely stiff though.  I'll have to wait until tomorrow morning to see what that means for performance.

Again sorry for the terrible iPod pictures, I'll have to find a proper camera at some point.

Nice for a first, the braiding seems great.
The first of such woven pouches tend to leave something to be desired,  I have experienced that Cheesy.  Make a couple more, no other way to improve.

Yarn breakage, do not use knots, just unravel the ends a little and overlap them, maybe 5 centimeters, or better; what feels right, before you continue braiding.  Just be a little careful, to keep them in place, and you will have an invisible joint.

When I had finnished my first sling with 16-strand complicated braid, I thought I`n need a long break before my next.  After a few days ideas for improvements began to pop up in my head.  Within the week I cut new strands of yarn, just to have them ready when the day came.  Next day I was well into the braiding.

I'm not sure how fast I'll get back on the braiding wagon when it comes to these Peruvian style slings.  Probably sooner than I think.

It does throw really well though.  It feels great.  The stiff cords are interesting to work with.  Accuracy seemed to be really good.  I haven't had any rock retention problems despite the hideous pouch.

Slings made from wool yarn is often way better than people would think, and yes, the peruvian braids make ... okay interesting, in a good way, cords.
Its just the way it is, the first slings may be incredibly functional, but not quite "works of art".  Later it is important not to make them so "artsy" they stop being functional.

That is an outstanding job.  Looks very clean.  Now you're ready for that Peruvian festival where everybody fights each other with slings and sticks and stuff.  You'll need one of those hats, though......

The hat's cool, though I don't think the dress would do anything for my waistline.

Very nice. Good job. I haven't been successful yet. I keep putting it down and then losing my place whenever I pick it up again! One day.

Looks great, I'm a big fan of that spiral twist pattern. I've never had to guts to even start one, so finishing them has never been a problem for me. Looking forward to seeing your next attempt.  Smiley

I'm starting to like the stiff cords and the way it holds a rock, which annoys me, as that means I'll make another one - probably several more.  And that means more hours spent braiding until my mind goes number than my fingers.  I really wish I enjoyed making slings as much as throwing rocks.

Wow, that definitely puts mine to shame.  I also found that the cord was very stiff on mine, but I'm really enamored with Peruvian style cradles.  Nicely done!

nice bit of braiding.

Umm, is the pouch braided ?
Impossible to tell from the pics. If so - good job. If it's leather - ouch  Wink
