Next project.

I will attempt the "Rockman" sling. My hemp sling has held up pretty good. I was very impressed by it. I got a huge roll of jute, and decided to give a different design a shot. Any pointers or tips ? Ill get pics up when im done.

Once you start saying things like "Rockman" and buying "jute" you're already on the path to madness like the rest of us.  You are lost in the slinger wasteland.  Braiding and weaving.  Just like us.............................

The first "good" sling I made was a Rockman.  Best pointer... cut lots of extra line.  There's nothing sadder then spending a couple of hours working on a sling only to discover that you didn't leave enough cord to finish off the release cord at the same length as the retention cord or that you're 7/8ths done weaving the pouch and there's not enough weaving cord to finish it.  You can always use the excess for whipping.  Don't be discouraged if your first few Rockmans aren't gorgeous.  Most of us have to make a few ugly slings before we get it right.
A Rockman is a great sling; one of my favorites.  It's versatile, accurate, durable, has great range, and is good looking.

I just did this. I ran out of string. I  unwound it and will reuse the string in another sling. After I sleep a bot, I will try again. Im also going to mess with the construction methods a bit to see if I can shave some time and brain power off the construction. Still, The Rockman is pretty fast to make compared to the first sling I wove. And so it is known, I have neglected my guns and archery tackle for slings so I am already over the edge. When im at work and see plants in the garden center I find myself wondering if this plant or that one can be turned into cordage for slings.  Shocked

One way to shave some time off of the construction of a Rockman is to use a four strand braid instead of a three. I do it all the time. The pouch will have two strands in it instead of three, but that's not a problem. At least for me the four strand method of braiding is faster and there's no down side. The resultant sling is just as strong and good looking as one made with a three strand braid. Plus with the four strand braid you have your choice of four different designs in the cords if you use different colored twine.

Ok, Here are my two rock man slings. The first I misjudged on the length and all that and got a short release cord, but I was able to unbraid it and get it right. My Son snatched it up and decided to keep it.

The second one is mine. I made it after everyone went to bed. I dont know the length of either, but that knife blade is 10.5 inches, and that hawk handle is 22 and change. It should give you an idea. Ill give y'all a range report later. Also, pleas excuse the dog hair and mess. The wife is away and I have decided to be a slob, and let my best friend up on the bed.

The slings came out good and the dog is cool looking too.  My female Husky, Kali, always sleeps with us.. in fact she's a terrible bed hog.  Some would probably find that weird but we don't care.  We like it.  She's very clean and doesn't have fleas.  The big boy, Odin, moves around all over the house at night.  He can't sleep in just one spot.
