Might my sling be to short for this technique?
Apr 4th, 2012, 1:59pm

So after not slinging for a few years, I'm trying to pick up where I left off, and experimenting with different casting techniques.
I'm starting to like the fell of the sidearm seen in this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXhdgXAlszg&feature=related , but even by best throws probably weren't going much past 100 feet. (The place I was slinging made actual measuring impractical.)
I figure I'll get better with practice, but might my sling be to short for this style?
Below is the old sling I was using, it's about 17 inches from the center of the pouch to the start of the finger loop.

17 inches is probably a bit too short. How tall are you? If you're less than 5 feet, go for around 23-24 inches, 5 feet to 5'6 go for 27-30. Past that if you're really tall, go up to 32 inches, but no more. They're very rough guesses, and I would recommend you to try different lengths until you find the perfect match.

Show us a video of you slinging- when I started my throws made only a 100 feet as well. As you get better, you should be able to get 100 yards. With that short sling, and a good strong throwing style, one might be able to make 100 yards as well, although I think you'd be better off learning with something longer.

17-12 inch slings are really great for tossing paper balls inside however...  Wink

With that particular style I would go with a 24 inch sling. That would be my personal preference though.  Sling length is a personal thing and it really comes down to lots of experimentation to find out what works best for you. I think the shortest sling I've tried was 16 inches and I got more power with it than just throwing by hand but nothing like a longer sling.

But you could use the shorter sling to try an over arm single swipe shot. We had a thread on this a while ago but I can't find (I can never seem to get the search function to work for me). Basically the idea was to have the sling hanging behind you and then throwing it in a single swipe. Much like the last movement in a figure 8 style. It needed a shorter sling, so you might try repurposing your shorter sling for that.

Thanks for the advice.
Seeing as I have to make a new sling anyways (mine is falling apart at the release knot.) I'll try making the next one a bit longer.

Are you talking about the "Apache' style?
I've been trying that one as well, and it seems a more efficient way to use a shorter sling.

Hey bazookabot how do you get this cupped shape when weaving a solid pouch? As for the length, I'm using a 35 inch sling and it gets me a lot of power but this is really the upper limit of how long I like a sling to be

I actually just followed the tutorial here http://slinging.org/index.php?page=braiding-a-solid-pouch---nick-martin .
The pouch seems to form a slight cupped shape on it's own.
(At least with the jute cord I use.)

Hi and welcome, Bazookabot;
I'm tall with long arms.  A 38" sling is normal for me.  My shortest slings are about 24".  A 17" sling would be almost useless to me.  Try a longer sling.

I've only done figure 8 a few times.  I have nothing against it, I just haven't learned it all that well yet.  For underarm I like the shorter 24" sling.  I can use a long sling but I'm more comfortable with the shorty for that style.  The shorty is also better for slinging in the woods on skinny trails with lots of branches and such in the way.  Other than that I like the longer 38" sling.  I can sling with a lot more power for a much longer duration with it.

It's similar. I really wish I could find that thread. We had another thread where we voted on what we wanted to call the style. The idea is similar to the apache but faster. So instead of having your arm hanging down by your side, you would have your arm raised almost like you were scratching the back of your head/neck with the sling hanging down your back. Then you would throw with a single swipe, twisting your body.

Its power would be lower than most of the other styles, but it would be faster. It was proposed as an overhand style suited to hunting type applications and required a significantly shorter sling than most of the other styles.

I think that the thread was started by Morphy. The style was something like fig 4...

17 is too short.

personally I'd say a minimum length for any useful sling would be 24 inches.

I have a 15" long sling and it does work pretty well. It can throw harder and more accurately than I can throw, but from a begginers standpoint, start with a nomal length sling. The super short slings are really no more accurate than a 24in or for me even a 30" so shorter slings are good to start out with but there is no reason to go less than 20in and 24 in is a good place to start.
