A spear might be a hair quietter but the rabbit stick (assuming it doesn't have a whistle on the end or something) is generaly very stealthy and quiet. If you are hunting with it, it's much more likly that the movement would give you away more than the sound. But to each his own, if you can throw a spear more accurately and more effectivly than a rabbit stick, I would undoubtly suggest you use that.

Bonjour Survivors,

  Today we got ol' Ahaw from Perigord France with an excellent archery tip.  Ahaw say's:

Here's my tip on how to make a quick bow in survival situation :
Cut two straight trunks either with your knife or a flint.
Diameter = a big thumb ; Length = from ground to shoulders
Take the bark off and keep it to use as rope (hoping you've learnt how to make a rope out of bark before !).
Put your 2 sticks on the ground, parallel, upside-down one to the other, and shift them like this :

small > __________________________________________                < big diameter
   big >               __________________________________________  < small diameter

Tie them up together where the + are :
  __________+___________+++_____________+___
            ___+___________+++_____________+__________

Now you've got a good bow frame, with thin flexible extremities, a good strong grip, and middle parts that are strong enough to transform the tension into dynamic energy !

Just need to tie a rope you've found or made to one end, put the bow in tension by passing it across your legs, and attach the other part.
There you are !
(now learn to make an arrow, hehe)

A shout out to Ahaw and all our Amis Du Francais and remember Survivors: The entire Tribe benefits from the contributions of each member.

  Fletch Out.

There's a lot of ways to make bundle bows. If you really plan on making one in the woods practice, and learn about it now. Not nearly as fast shooting as a good self bow but a lot easier to make for begginers.

I really like this thread. I think the idea of people sending their interesting tips to Fletch is a great idea.

I don't want to take anything away from this thread but didn't want to start a new thread with the same basic theme as this one or the Z-Day bugging out thread. With that said I do have a related question.

I travel by plane all over the country (US). If you are checking your bags you can pretty much take whatever you need including weapons and ammo. You're restricted on the quantity of ammo and there are restrictions on some types of hazardous materials items, that's about it. I could theoretically take a bug-out bag fully loaded everywhere I fly as long as I'm willing to have my bag travel below.

The reality is that I don't or can't take a loaded pack on every trip. So my question is this: If you were going to hand carry your luggage instead of checking in a bag, being extremely limited on what can be carried through the security checkpoint, what would you carry with you in preparation of an emergency on the road?

Salutations Slingers, Today's tip comes from BenKolmer out there at that State College and Ben say's:

  "Don't know if this is a survival tip, so much as it is a silly way to remember an important survival principal.
A hydrated slinger is a happy slinger, a dehydrated slinger is a dead slinger, and dead slingers have no fun.
Also, if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrating. Moral of the story, find water and clean it fast."

  Stay Happy, Stay Hydrated, because a dead Slinger is a useless Slinger.  Let's send a big 2 litre with a twist of lemon Evian shout out to Ben because nobobody wants to go to a "dry" t-shirt contest now do they?

  Basic edc for me in checked baggage is knife, ferro rod, cordage and water container.  If I flew with carry on only in this day and age I'd carry more cash, tiny ferro rod on my keychain and fedex or mail my other stuff to wherever I was staying.  What about it Slingers?  What would you do?

That is tough. Certainly some paracord and a bandana I really don't know what else I could legally carry through security that would be useful. Maybe some surgical tubing, for making an improvised slingshot but they might not like that.

A silly thing, but maybe a round flint-stone. So you can make sharp, small knife-like pieces of it. ( or amo for a sling Wink   )
Cord
alu/space blanket for shelter; and or big carabage bags
empty water bottle
a stainless steel cup to boil water in.
ferro-rod or something to make fire with.
water purification tabletts
first aid kit
bandanna
hat
moskitonet for face and one bigger if you have the space
proteinbars or something else to eat
candy /chokolate for quick energy

I would probably have my Shamag, a couple slings, "souvenier" rocks, a couple bundles of cord like 550, jute, and bankline. Mini fero rod, small canteen, some food, Ball headed war club that is also a "souvenier"( be sure to come up with a story as to why you have a large stick in your luggage before you get there.: Like have one that is 3ft long and call it a walking stick and you can cut it shorter when you get there) , some extra clothes, oh and probably 50 bucks to buy the rest of the stuff I need oncet I am there.

 Many people are surprised to know that you can also carry pretty much anything short of a bomb in your check luggage. Including all the tools you would need like a knife, hawk, bow and arrows, etc.

That would be for interior flights... inside the USA.
I'm not sure I can come to visit you from Europe with all these items !

BTW... why not start an new thread for this specific question, in order to leave the "Survival Tip of the Day" topic giving us... survival tips each day ?

This is just easier, we can still have our tips of the day then if people have something to add you can post here.

I can't tell you, I'm sure it's different there as they actually have various knife laws and such, but "walking sticks" are pretty much allowed everywhere. And if you brought cash you could probably buy everything you need here for much cheaper.

US-made tools and weapons, for sure... but we do make some in Europe too that would be more expensive in the US  Wink
As for Chinese-made stuff (which concerns maybe 90% of everything) well it would be about the same price I guess.

Hey, how you doin', Survivors?  Todays survival tip come from Ol' RatMan from out there in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.  El Hombre Raton say's:

"Hi, fletch_man;
   I don't know if this is a good enough tip, but I've found it useful on one occasion.  I went camping in the mountains with a couple of buddies.  We forgot to bring dish detergent with us.  The last thing you want is food poisoning or ptomaine from dirty dishes or utensils.  We were fortunate in that our dinner plates were made of copper so all of our stuff was metal.  It was all from the same camping kit.  After each meal we'd take our dishes down to the shore of the river and scrub them in with the sand there.  Then we'd rinse, go back up to the camp, and sterilize everything using the campfire.  You don't have to get the stuff red hot, just to boiling temperature, so nothing got coated with carbon.  We were up there for three or four days, cleaning our dishes and utensils in that manner, and no one got sick.
   So anyway that's my tip.. how to do dishes in the wild without dish soap using just sand and fire."

Cooking and sanitation are extremely important and this is an excellent way to do both with less muss and fuss.  Slingers let's send a big "Jersey Devil" shout out to RatMan for an excellent survival tip.  A healthy well fed Slinger is not to be trifled with....................
