It could be bad, it could be good. I don't want the US to get into another war, so I'm happy about it. It would mean that we couldn't go and invade Syria without waging war with a much greater power. Hopefully it'll cause the US to rethink their stance. But if the vocal idiots in government do decide to wage war against very clear warnings not too...than may god help us all.

I'm quite sure we have a few drones up there and some CIA agents. What I'm also pretty sure of is that the US isn't very actively doing much, nor making threatening gestures towards the world. I would guess that they're surveying both sides and seeing how things are working out.

The Turks have never been chummy with the Russians, and now they have Russian troops on their southern border? Definitely not something they could appreciate. Although I imagine that the Israelis could make the Russian troops wish they were somewhere else.

It looks to me like Putin is making a big show for the home folks, trying to make it look like Russia's still a major player instead of a disaster on roller skates. They still have nukes, but the army and navy are a mess. Their big strength is that they control most of the natural gas that western Europe uses, and will use the threat of cutting that off as a weapon.

When all is said and done more will have been said than done.

The thing is that the Russians aren't the world's do gooders. Rather then help defeated countries set up their own governments and help their industries to recover the Russians tend to annex their defeated foes. Their army and navy might be a mess but they can still deliver nukes to anywhere in the world. If need be does Obama have the stuff to stare down the Russians like Kennedy did? I certainly hope so. Weakness could be just as bad as over aggressiveness. J.F.K. could look Kruschev (one of history's great boogie men) in the eye and say, "Then there will be war!" Crap, I already lived through all of this once.

Well, I believe it will at some time. The middle east doesn't like (for various religious and political reasons) Israel- the ironicaly small military super power that's helping keep them in line- and the middle east has oil. Russia has nuclear stuff and likes oil. So in exchange for oil, Russia gives some of the middle east a starters kit for purifying uranium. However, everytime the middle east can rustle up a 1/4oz of uranium and a slingshot, Israel is quick to send a few fighter jets and wipe them off the map. Now as long as Russia doesn't get involved with Israel (which they will) and the middle east doesn't actually configure Weapons of mass desturction, this monopoly continues. However, right now it's looking kinda unstable. But, I think we have a little while. And China won't get involved for quite a while.

basically a lot of hot air about nothing.

Most major countries have many 'advisory' military units in lots of dodgy countries.

As far as russia becoming the new do-gooders - well lets face it only america thinks america is the current do-gooder. Everyone else thinks it's the schoolyard bully constantly throwing it's weight around.
And yep to a certain extent britain gets lumped in with it. though Our current military has been stripped right to the bone.

It's all relative to where you live and how you perceive your own nation.

Before people start claiming syria is the new eveil in town - people ought to stop ignoring africa. But africa doesn't have enormous oil reserves, and at the present time it all boils down to oil.

Given the total bollocks up of iraq (invaded purely for the oil, that nobody actually got) and afghanistan - I doubt america is going to start another unwinnable and unjustifiable war anytime soon.
And britain sure can't afford to.
