The Hobbit Pub
Mar 18th, 2012 at 6:52am

For over 20 years, a Tolkien themed pub in Southampton England has existed. It's called the Hobbit. It's quietly minded it's own business and become a bit of a mecca for gamers and other like minded people there.
Now the owners of the LOTR movies want the place shut down, saying that it's a copyright infringement. It doesn't matter if they existed before the movies.

Wow. If I had money I would be donating it like crazy to the pub to support a very good lawyer.

Sounds to me like another case of corporate lawyers finding something to justify their existence (and obscene salaries).

Soon someone will file a copyright infringement claim on the word "The" so all-y'all best get used to the idea of using sentences witout the use of "the".

yeah why we can't simply turn round and say - go F*** yourself I don't know.

It is ridiculous that someone can claim copyright to a name that's been used long before the name was copyrighted.

Why would these idiots even bother to do something like this ?
All it's going to do is generate negative publicity for the upcoming film.

Why? Why does a dog lick his b@ll$. Because he can. They can because the courts let them. WE (society) let them. It is all about greed, "Follow the money..." truer words were never spoken.

What about changing the name of the pub into "The Halfling" or "The Holbytlan"?

Or the pub in Bree where Frodo & Co stayed? The Dancing Pony, I think it was.

The Prancing Pony.     They shouldn't have to do a damn thing. Nothing is being taken away from the profit machine of the lord of the rings franchise because this little pub that shares a name with a book that has been in circulation since the late 30's. The butcher said it best, "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."

Although Im not in favour of the bullying of the big companies, to be fair to them, the pub is using imagery from the films and therefore using the films to help sell itself.
Looking at the menus used in the bar, they have the New Line map of Middle Earth as the background, the state that they have Elijah Wood as Frodo on the back of their membership cards and Im sure they take a bit more still.
It wont do any damage to New Line, but they are making money off someone elses hard work and not paying for it.

Whether it is through the outcry or whether it was the original offer (I dont know which), an article said that New Line offered them to continue if they paid £100 (think thats roughly US$185, not sure) per year. Really this is nothing at all, especially from the publicity the pub has attracted over this article. Really, a group of friends could easily spend £100 in a night in that pub, and Im sure all this free advertising is going to attract more than one group a year.

I do think the bullying is wrong, but I think New Line do deserve something if their products (specifically theirs, not just Middle Earth in general) is going to be used.

Yea, that puts a different perspective on things doesn't it? If that article is right and they only had to pay less than 200 dollars a year that is a very generous offer to use the movie's imagery. If they had no imagery from the movies I could see the other sides point. Can't have it both ways though.

Still though, it sounds like a great place for short guys to pick up women.  That would be worth the $185 a year by itself..................
