Rat Man, your point about heaven not being true paradise for you if your pets won't be there introduces the paradox.
If a person is married and in love with a murderer who is condemned to hell, how can the person have true paradise in heaven? The murderous spouse won't be there!

Will god somehow adulterate the mind of any such person so that he/she forgets the loved one who is damned? "Ignorance is bliss (created by god)"? How is this supposed to work? How do the religious explain their way around this?

The religious would say that we are all perverted. All fallen. All twisted. Even our desires are twisted so that we want things we know in our hearts are wrong, and don't want the things that are best for us. Only through submission to god and searching for his will can our desires be completed.

Not perverted but fixed and fulfilled. Cognative therapy instead of brainwashing, though from the outside it is often difficult to see the difference. So by submitting, by agreeing to have the bad excised from us, God then brings us into a state of perfection. And that state of perfection, in perfect harmony with Him, is Heaven.

If however we choose not to undergo the therapy, we are allowed to continue in our own way, and the corruption becomes complete. Our selfishness given its whole head, and contrasted with the perfection that we could have chosen and this is hell.

That is the best I've heard. There are still objections that can be raised, but your main objection can be answered peaceful jeffrey. The answer is that we are unable to be in heaven as we are, and must be fixed, must have our being transformed (they would add into who we were meant to be) to be in heaven. This is not the case just for the woman who loves a murderer, but for all of us from Mother Teresa to Ghandi.

As for me. I no longer know what I believe. I am searching. Maybe someday I'll have an answer worth sharing.
