Do Pets Go To Heaven?
Mar 9th, 2012, 3:42pm

Here's the first religious topic since the experimental ban lifting.  This is sort of light on purpose, just to get the ball rolling.  Please remember, the idea is to state your own views, not trash someone else's.
I picked the third option.  If heaven is the ultimate in joy then my dearly departed animal family members have to be there.  Otherwise there would be something missing in my happiness and it couldn't really be heaven.  Simple as it may seem, that's my logic.  If I'm so fortunate as to make it past the pearly gates I very much expect to see, along with human family members of course,  Poochie, Jemema, Schnitzle, Natasha, Comet, Pokey, and if I happen to outlive them, Kali and Odin all sitting there happily waiting for me.  Otherwise it's someone else's heaven.

I don't know, maybe there isn't even a heaven, but if there is, I think they do go.

I agree with Rat Man. My dogs are just as much a part of the family as me and I'd fully expect to see them in heaven. As a matter of fact, I couldn't imagine a heaven without pets.

This is how it seems to me:  As humans we have individual souls.  I don't believe they retain our current personality when they pass because that is just of this earth.  I think animals have a collective soul that they return to that welcomes and protects them.  Like a cat or dog soul that is made up of feline or canine energy.  Maybe we'll be able to see and interact with them over on the other side, but, with that being said,  there's also going to be a whole bunch of cows, pigs, fish, goats, sheep and various birds that are going to be major-pi$$ed at you for eating them down here...................

A generaly nice light topic, kinda hard to actually prove most of the options though. I love my dog, but the first option rings seems right on to me.

Pets do indeed go to heaven, but we usually call it "peanut butter jar."

Of course being a naughty old atheist itook the "no heaven" option.   Should I be wrong, I'd have accumulated quite a menagerie by now...   At least a dozen dogs, a couple of turtles, sundry snakes and lizards, a mole (really) and a Missouri tarantula.

There's a part of me that's always imagined dogs as guardian angels.  You never really own them; they're just a loan from God for a while.

I'm withholding judgement till I'm dead - but if such a thing exists, then yes my dogs will be there, or I'm going somewhere else Smiley

I don't believe in heaven, so I voted the no, because there is no heaven option. But if I did believe, then they quite certainly would go.

Seems it's hard to prove the existance of heaven or hell for that matater whether it's for animals or people. Are pets different from other animals simply because of our emotional attachment to these select animals? Are pets different from livestock or animals raised by humans for food? What about cultures that eat animals that other cultures consider as pets, dogs for instance. What about insects, a pet taurantula? Do you think heaven would be heaven for a someone afraid of spiders?

Yours is a good point,  Piakru, but you're asking a separate question.  I asked if our beloved pets go to heaven.  Whether or not all animals do is another question.  I would imagine so, but I'm not sure.
If someone loved a pet spider and wanted it in heaven with them it wouldn't be a problem.  Those afraid of spiders here would have no fears in heaven, right?  It's heaven after all.  We'd all see the spider as the beautiful animal it is.
On this level it's impossible to prove any of this of course.  It's all speculation and hopeful thinking, unless you have very strong faith.  If there is a perfectly joyous afterlife and if I'm fortunate enough to be included in it my pets will certainly be there or my joy is incomplete.  My heaven has dogs and other pets running around it.
