Personally I believe there is truth in the vast majority of religions. Especially the ones that have been around awhile. That doesn't make me very popular with the fundamentalists of any particular religion since they tend to be very rigid that they are the only right one. But it's my belief all the same. I also believe that it is essentially a law of religion that the longer it is on the earth the more possibility there is for corruption in it's teachings. And, in fact, I believe that all religious teachings have been corrupted to some degree or another if for no other reason than we as human beings love to interpret things according to our own bias and paradigms, and love our long-held traditions of what's right more than getting down on our knees, repenting of all our problems and asking God to make us worthy of knowing what He sees as truth. It's much easier to argue and debate and have the false security that one's particular interpretation just happens to be the right one out of all the millions of wrong ones. I've done it too, so not pointing fingers at anyone in particular.

Strangely enough you will find a great deal of similarities in seemingly very disparate religious teachings. I believe the reason for that is because at least part of it came from the same God.  And because He speaks to any and all of His children wherever they may be so long as they desire to hear Him. That's my belief anyways.

Also I really enjoy Thin Mints. Somoas aren't bad either.

Well said. I'm gonna be nerdy now and quote Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon;

"It is like a finger, pointing away at the moon. Don't focus on the finger, or you will miss all that heavenly glory!"

And then he smacks that kid upside the head  Grin

The "moon" is Truth (capital-T Truth) and the "finger" pointing to it is the religions that attempt to explain the ultimate Truth, which may very well be a thing that's not possible to explain in words. So if words fall short and the structure of a religion is based on the words, and the later structure is built on the earlier structure, and so on, until there's massive layers of extraneous bureaucracy overlapping and overwhelming the golden kernel of Truth at the milky chocolate center that started the whole structure off on the first place!

C.S. Lewis talks about it in Mere Christianity, That Christians have the freedom to believe that there are some truth in all reliegions and although when they put 2 and 2 together the answer might be -15 or 3, the second number is closer to the truth, but still not quite there. And in the end 4 is still the only right answer. He then goes later to talk about other relegions and how everything all ties in from an atheist perspective as well as a few others. However I cannot expand, so if you wish you can read the first chapter in the second section of Mere Christiainity.   Wink

I think it's fairly obvious that no religion or philosophy has a lock on pithy wisdom.   Consider the "Golden Rule", which has been iterated in many cultures, and long preceeds Christianity.  Confucius stated the principal, for instance.
One reason for this is that at the time when humanity began to indulge in myth-making.  (at the dawn of our species, Homo Sapiens Sapiens), the human population was quite small.   Much of it was centered around North Africa and the Mediteranean basin.
Even though humanity was not even beginning to live in villages or settlements at that time, there is evidence of interaction between these early humans and myths would have been passed on and adapted.

Campbell notes this in his writings; like The Hero With A Thousand Faces.  There's no mystery why stories like Gilgamesh would have sprung from an earlier oral tradition, and that plot would be re-used by many cultures.
We do the same today....

Reddit has an "atheist" section, and as a sub-Reddit there's "debate an atheist".   I've been looking at this one for a few weeks, and it's not bad; not nearly as flame-prone as much of the rest of the site.

I'd call Reddit a deeply problematic site for a few reasons. It makes American Atheists look like a reasonable outreach organization, despite their rich and varied history of PR disasters.

I haven't been looking at the sub-reddit long enough to form an opinion; Reddit in general is so diverse as to defy any sort of generalization.
I subscribe to threads on sci-fi, art, guitar, knives, guns, etc.  that are all pretty entertaining.
However, some of the others are a little odd.
The straight "atheist" forum for instance, consists of people posting humorous jabs; no in-depth discussion at all.

Reddit is okay, but sometimes if you go deep enough you get to the part of Reddit that isn't just atheist, but extremely, extremely, ridiculously anti-religion- Atheists that make WBC look tolerant. Very annoying, especially when my own personal view of Atheism is acceptance, tolerance, and neutrality.   Roll Eyes

To be honest though, if all religious discussion on our forum could be like that- light hearted jabs, then I would gladly allow religious discussion pop up anywhere. It's just that we often get into the deep dark corners where the sun never shines that things go haywire.

Reminds me of one of my classes in school. A friend told me a story from her period. They were discussing Job from the Bible, and the teacher asked kids if they would kill their parents if "God" told them to. One person didn't give a definite answer, yes or no. Now of course, that should strike people as ridiculous, don't kill your parents due to the voice in your head, but many seem to disagree.

"Come on you sons of bitches! Do you want to live forever?"

"A sword is a weapon. The art of swordsmanship is learning how to kill. That is the truth"

"Dead!" I answered, and amiably "Murdered," the Hangman corrected me. "First the alien ... then the Jew. I did no more than you let me do."
