Multiple styles or 1?
Mar 8th, 2012, 9:27am

So, we have had this come up in a few threads recently and now I am kinda curious what the results are. Do you use lots of styles for different applications or just one so you can master consitensy from that one style.

For me I have a main style kind of like a hard baleric but I will use sidearm, underhand, greek overhand, or even fig. 8 if the situation demands it or if I just feel like it.

What about you?

Multiple styles.  I like Balearic, Byzantine, Helicopter, Underarm, and sometimes Apache.  I like Underarm for targets that are close, like within fifty yards or when there's a lot of obstructions in the way of my slinging.  When the target is farther away I'll use one of the overarm styles.  I'm most accurate with Underarm.

Generally just one.  Lately, I have been doing a little Overshoulder but I always end up doing 95% of whatever type of slinging I am doing with just Fig-8. As soon as I can figure out how to do with the Fig-8 what I do with the Overshoulder, even that will probably end up stopping.

I favor helicopter side-arm style. I also throw Apache style (originally taught to me by my dad). I got one my guys at work to start slinging. In demonstrating styles, he picked up on the figure 8. We threw a bag of dried out Clementine oranges during lunch.

I use only one style...Byzantine. I find this to be the most effective for me.

You´d get more practice focusing on one style.

"Beware the man who shoots only one bow for he knows how to use it." Sort of applies. Sort of...

That being said it depends on what you are doing. Sometimes I just want to sling a stone far with no messing around. In those cases there is no need to use figure-8 because I don't need a high degree of practice or skill with it to accomplish what I want to do. I just use Byzantine and it works. Accuracy, by far, requires the most intense practice so for that I only use one style. Even using just one style it's likely I'll never reach the peak of what's possible. So training many styles is out of the question for me. It's hard enough with just one.

The way I figure it (and what I do), it's probably best to have one main style that you would us 80% of the time and then have some other styles in your back pocket for different applications that you practice occasionaly anyway to stay sharp in case you need to use them.

Almost always Fig.8 with a little underarm at times. For me, underarm is less accurate but it's also less tiring with no strain on the elbow or shoulder.

I do use multiple styles for different purposes. Fig.8 is my main style(damn with this style i feel like a crossbreed between trebuchet and a catapult) used for general slinging and for better aiming, sidearm(balearic / byzantine) for relaxed practice slinging and underarm for fun(frankly with this not so powerful style i have a hit ratio 8:10)... I think that a normal slinger should know different styles and to specialize in one best suited to him

39-40 inch slings I do straight helicopter.  Shorter slings I do a modified over the shoulder by holding the pouch out in front, dropping it, and then stepping and throwing over the shoulder.  It's an excellent technique if you ever run with the sling.  Which I don't.  Ever.  Run.

I picked option 2, but to be honest it's a bit between 1 and 2. I use and practice a wide number of styles (including attempting a few unheard of ones), and while typically I stick to a Balearic-style sidethrow, I do like to mix it up if the target calls for it, or even just for kicks/well-roundedness.

I agree with Morphy, that it's hard enough with just one. Lately I really have been wondering that if any useful level of accuracy (for hunting) is the quest, then would it not be better to just focus on and specialize in one particular style. I find myself favouring the byzantine style over all other styles, it just feels like the most natural style, but I often worry that it isn't a fast enough style for hunting due to the slow wind-up. Hence, I also practice the apache style to a lesser extent and throw in a few figure-of-8 s each practice session too.

Other, I use whatever style I feel like using lol. Usually this means I'm doing Balearic, but I'll do simple side arm, byzantine, and figure 8 fairly often as well. The only style I can't seem to get right is Greek side arm and overhand. I just can't get a lot of power into it.
