Yes! Allright I got a couple.

"The War to End All Wars" WW 1

"The Unsinkable ship"  The Titanic

Is that better?  Tongue

Much better thank you Smiley

Okay truly huge lies:

Democracy (that's it, nothing else needed lol)
the speed of light is a universal constant
Einsteins theory of relativity is correct (so how come it doesn't work for sub atomic particles -  because it's wrong)
quantum theory is genius (so how come it doesn't work for macro atomic particles -  because it's wrong)
richard dawkins is an atheist (oh really, his fanatical obsession that he's right and everybody else is wrong sure sounds like religious fervour to me)

Some less controversial ones:

don't eat apple cores or the seeds will grow in your stomach
don't swallow chewing gum or it will tangle up your intestines
a mars a day helps you work rest and play (lol)
hard work never killed anybody

So how is "lie" being defined? I really don't see lies being posted.

Looks like people are only posting statements they think are wrong, or statements that have been wrong.
Yes, that is one definition of lie, but is that really how you use the word in real life? I think intention to deceive another person plays a much larger role in defining a lie than the amount it's being applied here.

The quote about peace in our time, I'm sure Chamberlain truly thought that he had succeeded.
People truly thought the Titanic was "unsinkable".

You're absolutely right Woonilsra. The original intent of the thread was for people to talk about experiences/stories they had themselves or knew of personally where someone really told a big one and it turned out somewhat humorously or really strangely. It kind of evolved into this though. Either type is fine.  I know I've told some whoppers in my time... especially as a teen but nothing comes to mind. smh...

Excellent point, Woonilsra.  They aren't lies if the people who said these things believed them.  They're misconceptions, something completely different.

I agree with your definitional point. The best definition for a lie I've heard is "A lie is a statement made with an intent to deceive", and many of these do fail that criterion.

I disagree with you about Chamberlain though. I don't think he really believed it. I think he hoped, but I think that he knew that there would be no peace.  But then that's just my interpretation. Who knows?

I don't agree. When Chamberlain returned from his meeting with Hitler he was triumphant.  I think he really believed that he'd achieved peace in his time.  Of course, this is just my interpretation, which is no more valid than yours.

It was peace in his time. His time was just a little shorter than he thought it would be.

This one is a lie beacuse I tell myself that even though I know that I will not remember.  Maybe it is not a lie for everyone, but it is for the most the people I know.

Here's a lie for you.  I think the story behind this one is the woman who gets hit was talking crap to this other woman while she was trying to give her speech to a city counsel. (I think) Enough to get a smack at least. Check out her reaction...

Morphy, this sort of thing happens a lot in cities in south LA County. In one city council meeting one of the councilwomen slugged a councilman who was like 70 years old, claiming he groped her (in front of the whole council). I think the guy was the only one on that council who wasn't indcited for corruption. That whole part of the county is noted for civic hanky panky. The video was from Carson, one of those cities, BTW.

Here's a double cross

Two business partners swindle a bunch of simpletons into getting a lot of money. A lie in itself, but the actual lie is that it never happened. Somewhat like a lie in a lie....INCEPTION!
