This isn't a lie, but it is slightly outrageous! It is a misunderstanding of slinging.
In class, my teacher asked what we use parks for. (I'm a recreation and parks major). While students answered with things such as "seek solitude, go hiking, hunt, etc," I raised my hand an said "I go to the park because people generally don't appreciate if you sling rocks in a dense population area."
To this my teacher replied, "What? Are you selling cocaine!? Is that what slinging rocks is?"

If anyone replies to this thread with anything concerning religion I will lock the thread. If anyone makes a new thread about religion, I will lock that too. We've been over it enough. Dan, you should know better. You have fanned the flames on every religious dispute from before we had a ban in place.

I was not aware of such a ban. That is a shame.

It was decided by the Mods after the most recent long thread (read "flame war") on religion that we cannot debate religion or lack thereof rationally and with cool heads. If and when the general tone of discussions on the forum changes I'm sure the ban will be lifted, but for now religion is off limits.

As kids we were constantly fed the story of George Washington and the cherry tree.  For those who aren't American, the story goes that when George Washington was a little boy, out of boredom or whatever, he chopped down his father's favorite cherry tree.  When Dad stormed "Who chopped down my tree?" little Georgie chimed  "I cannot tell a lie, father, you know I cannot tell a lie! I did cut it with my little hatchet.''  Because Georgie had told the truth his dad was overjoyed and there was no punishment.
Little Rat Man took one of his colored pencils and scribbled inside the new porch closet Dad had just built.  When Dad said "Who did this" I of course said "Father, I can not tell a lie.  It was me."  Due to the fable I expected to be swept up into Dad's arms and congratulated for telling the truth.  Instead, to my shock, I got my little arse whooped.  "But I told the truth!  But I told the truth!"  That was the last stupid fable I ever believed.  Screw George Washington!

Darn proud of doing so too,  and I wouldn't have done it any other way if I were to do it again. Not so much for making an argument hotter, but I'll defend my faith, and proclaim the Truth whenever it is necessary.
I do see your point though as being a moderator you kind of has to keep things cool, so on that account you are doing your job much better than I could. So in the future when it happens again I have nothing against you for moving the replies and such and locking it.

I know a lot of the older guys on here would probably actually remember the things they were told like how we would be driving flying cars by the year 2000 or how we should expect global cooling. I guess they are not really lies because they didin't know but still kinda funny today.

Global cooling sounds nice.  I would like to see some snow around here.

I agree. There has not been nearly enough snow this year.

I just read a graphic novel adaptation of a twilight zone episode where two apocalypses were explored. One with global warming, and the other from freezing. I think the point was that the opposite will always sound better than the one you're experiencing, but really I'd rather deal with cold and snow than heat.

I remember that episode.  It was a pretty good one.  Someone was delirious and believed that they were at one extreme.  They'd actually been driven insane and were at the other, but I can't remember which was real, the heat or the cold.

Global climate fluctuates on a scale of millions of years between what is known as a "greenhouse" and an "icehouse" world. Believe it or not, we are actually in an icehouse climate, due to the presence of polar ice caps and glaciers. How, as we all know, the past 150 years (post industrial revolution) have had a large impact on climate, and the Earth has warmed much faster than it would have naturally in that time. Despite this, if the average global temperature were to drop by a mere seven degrees C, we would actually enter another ice age.

A far more balanced view than I normally see presented, my only point of contention would be with the "large impact" of a single causal variable based on associative data contrasting it with inferred historical probability. I'm not a fool who think that the industrial revolution had no effect, but I'm unconvinced it is as large as is claimed. The more I learn methods and statistics, the more leery I become of "we all know" popularized scientific concepts. It's messier than that simple story, that I'd almost guarantee.

Hasn't Global Warming become somewhat of a religion of sorts, both sides pointing to their proof? Maybe this needs to be another topic that gets nixed.   Cheesy
