I just threw in my vote in fire hardend spear. For me, the only time I would use a spear is the finishing off of large animals (those which perhaps were mostly dead from a shot from a sling). Any other use (fishing, hunting, or fighting) I would rather use my knife, sling, rabbit stick, or my bow and arrows. Because I am more used to them and could probably use those more effectivly.

Oh and prefered time period would probably be early to mid 1700's in the North Eastern Woodlands.

And I'd probably also like to have a spear as well, if I was in modern day africa and need to fend off large predators.

The only use I would have for a spear is defense against bears and mountain lions. Give me a good medieval boar spear. I'll make a bow/sling for hunting etc.

I chose metal tipped. Sure fire hardened would be enough to hunt, but if i can get myself a metal tip, why not? Also, if I were in antiquity then chances are I would need to know basic combat skills in case I would be called in as a men at arms; or just to protect the family farm from bandits. In that case give me a nice sharp leaf bladed spear any day.

I chose both metal tipped and thrown (loophole in the poll Tongue) because I would carry 3 to 4 javelins for ranged attack and a single heavier spear for midrange fighting. Whether I was on a battlefield or out deer hunting in an area where I'd have to hypothetically defend myself from bears that would be my spear-based setup.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

The most refined (IMO...) development of the spear for a personal weapon was the Japanese yairi.  A nicely-tapered and finished piece of hardwood with a razor-sharp blade of good Japanese steel on the end.

The fighting forms were highly developed and from the period of widespread duelling among the Ronin the spear was always listed as among the most dangerous weapons to face.
Slashing, stabbing, pole-arm.... Adjustable length.....   A fearsome weapon.

Pointed stick, just like Neanderthal ones (4 of them have been found in Germany, and dates back to 400'000 years bp. They're all made of wood and the biggest has a double point!)
Greetings,
Mauro.

What am I using it for?  Am I fighting off bears, using it to help me climb, hunting deer or rabbits, harpooning a fish?  Spears are specialized weapons, contrary to what most people think.

Bill it's whatever you would use it for. If you'd rather hunt deer and bear with a bow than you would use the spear for occasional anti personel and taking out predators.

If you'd rather not use a bow than you would need a spear more sutable for hunting small and large game.

So there is a lot of personel scenario involved with preference, I think.

For me a robust jabbing spear with some cuttting ability on the edges would be "best".  This would require a metal point.  If not awailable a longish bone point or short stone point would have to do.
Fire hardened point aka "advanced" sharpened stick, I`m not that sure I could make it penetrate even the hide of whatever I urgently needed it to stab, so that`s a last resort IMO.
I`d throw my spear if I had to but it`s easyer to carry sling stones for distance work.

A knightly spear about 6 feet long, short enough for combat, can be thrown and with a long enough head it can also cut. Complete with butt spike,

Something like the two on the right. Nice!
