Woohoo. I'm going to Ireland
Feb 7th, 2012, 3:27pm

It's a working vacation. I'll be in the Clare area at an archeological dig called Cahelconnell. It's a ringfort that was active all throughout the Middle Ages. I'll spend 12 days there in July and August, then, I'll be touring.
They can help me get into the Dublin Museum and see the "slings" that are in storage there also.

Cool!
You may meet a friend of mine who's actually working at Dublin's Small Museum! His name's Riccardo and perhaps he could help you should you find troubles of any kind!
I envy you, I'd like to retourn to travel too  Smiley
What's the job you've to do?
Greetings,
Mauro.

Good for you, sb.  I've never been to Ireland.  I'd love to see it some day also.  Congratulations!

Not sure yet. It's actually part of a summer school program run by the University of Ireland. It will cover a lot I'm sure. Since the Byron dig, where I volunteered last was literally in the middle of a swamp, there was a lot of improvisation there. Rules were bent because they needed to be.

Grin
I envy you more and more. Make pics of the digging if you're allowed to, and share the less important (scientifically) with us!
Thanks,
Mauro.

Sounds like fun!

I'm from the next county across the Shannon River, i.e. Tipperary. County Clare is absolutely beautiful, with other naturally beautiful sites like the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, the Aran Islands, as well as happening little villages all through the summer for festivals like Lisdoonvarna, Lahinch (surfing), Ennistymon and Doolin (irish trad music), Kilkee (SCUBA diving).

If you get a chance, visit the Iron Age fort at Black Head, a few miles west of Ballyvaughan. It's not in as good a shape as the one you mentioned but it is one of my favourite places in Ireland because it's right in the middle of the Burren and looks across to the Aran Island to the west and over Galway Bay to the Twelve Pins mountains in Connemara to the north.

If you'd like any tips about Irleand or places to visit, just let me know. I hope you have a wonderful time and that the weather stays fine for your visit.

Ta failte romhat! (gaelic. lit. there is a welcome before you).

Kevin.

Remember to share by taking lots of pictures.  Ireland is a beautiful country, when it isn't raining.  I was there in October and it was sort of soggy.

I always wanted to try some real Irish stout and whiskey; not the stuff they ship to us, but the stuff they drink.  Though I don't drink anymore, I could make an exception on a trip to Ireland.
