How did you become interested in slinging?
Feb 1st, 2012, 11:57pm

Hey all, I thought it would be interesting to share what inspired us to pick up the old sling and give 'er a twirl.
For me, I remember tying a piece of fabric to some kitchen twine when I was pretty young. Needless to say it didn't go to well. Just recently I read through the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, which re-ignited my interest and got me going. Low and behold, I would up here!

Read about it in Clan of the Cave Bear years ago but did not think of it again until three years ago. I still don't believe in Ayla's miraculous double shot. I think Auel took a good idea and exercised some artistic licence. But that's a whole other thread. Smiley

It's a common weapon in the Redwall book series for children, ironically when I was very young I had a wrist rocket and when I read about David and Goliath I thought he was using the same thing. This of course was before I read a book on vulcanized rubber (which seeing as I was in middle school I first thought it meant that vulcan's made it.../sigh brain farts embarrassed). So yeah I love the idea of creating a survival tool from almost anything, and I'm huge in to marksmanship so it's a bonus that it have to get good with it 8^).

I was deep into historical archery and was willing to try something more "manoeuverable" than a bow, but equally effective.
Greetings,
Mauro.

Reading about the Benjamite slingers in Judges, while being interested in sling shots (with the rubber) and eventualy while wathcing slingshot videos one of the suggest reasults was I beleive "Slinging traditional styles" then I kinda mimicked that and tried making a few slings with ductape and various fabrics. And then I found this place where I learned for awhile and then decided if I was here often enouhg I might as well get an account. Fast forward 3 years and Bam! Here we are.

Partially paralyzed left arm, C-4 pinch, works perfectly for years and then it won't.  I like shooting a bow but that is sorta hard to do with one arm.  Reading the posts on Primitive Archer and someone posted that if I liked primitive ways, I would find this site very interesting.  He was right.

I've always been interested in weaponry and was discussing primitive weaponry on another board and he referred me here. I've always needed to work with my hands and this gave me something to do that was cheap and enjoyable  Smiley

For me it was hearing about David and Goliath and other Biblical slinging references, and watching Thom Richardson's demonstration on the Royal Armouries' Arms in Action series.

I have for a long time been interested in knots and braiding.  And as a kid I attempted slinging without any succes.  After that I have always been interested in slinging, but I could never find any useful information about it - until I finally thought about  searching through internet.  Then I found this site(I finally got an good internet connection and realized this was IT with the forum and all), at the same time I stumbled into a store that sold cheap hemp cord, and suddenly I began the journey toward becoming a slinger/slingmaker.

I really can't say what possessed me to begin making slings. My grandma was big into bible stories and David and Goliath ranked right up there in my all time favorites. That may have been the spark that started it all.

I've always felt that I don't belong in this time.  I'm more of a hunter/gatherer type.  I have an interest in all things very ancient.  I was curious about the sling, did an online search, and of course ended up here.  What attracts me to the sling is that I can do it all myself.  I don't need any manufactured parts or ammo.  Sure, I used commercially made string, but if I wanted to I could make my slings from plant fibers or dog fur. In fact I will some day.  My ammo is laying around all over the place. I need never run out.
