Just the full one. Every 28 days.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Just a guess, the sap is low so the trees dry quicker, so the wood can be used quicker.  Also, the wood won't split or check as bad with lower sap levels.

I'm not sure about conifers but deciduous trees' sap is in the roots during the winter months so the wood would be lighter to transport and might burn better. It might give lumber a headstart on drying also.

Full moon? So you can see what you're doing? But why not during the daytime? Sounds vaguely Druidical.

Grin It's simpler to see certain animals at night; boars for example: I've just seen 12 of them during the day, many others during nights!
Wolves... I was lucky to see 2 of them, and am waiting to find some more!
By the way I agree about the sap, but why one has to wait for the full moon? And why a lumberjack has to cut down a tree during night!?!
I love these sorts of things, rediscovering ancient traditions...  Smiley
Greetings,
Mauro.

I think the "full moon" doesn't mean "during the night", but the day before or after this night, they did'nt see any better than us by night Wink

After a quick google search, here, it's more about the ascending moon above the horizon (?) than the growing one...

Concerning November and December, it's because those are winter months : the sap is low on the roots and not high in the tree, allowing a better/quicker drying of your wood...

that's all for now, and don't go burning your astrology books !

Cheesy I will not!
I am ok about the sap, and yes perhaps "the full moon" mean "cut the wood between November and Dicember": there's a month between a full moon and another!
Ancient people rulez.

Do you watch at the moon too?  Smiley

I do when I can I can find it amid the clouds. Western Scotland is not good for sky watching Sad.

I thought you might be watching for purposes of building yourself a stone circle or something like that.

I wonder if the full moon is mentioned for purposes of either coordinating meetings of people all coming to help, or because even if they fell the things in daylight by the time they have reduced them to logs they would have run out of daylight and need the light of the moon to get back home, although even your winter days there are nowhere near as short as they get in more extreme latitudes.

In ancient Norwegian lore it`s well known that wood should be cut the days around full moon.  No need to do it in the dark.
But especially do not cut it while the moon is waning, a new moon makes for better wood.

I`m not sure how far I trust those ancients, though Wink

Now I'm a bit confused - a new moon being exactly the opposite of a full moon.

By the way, about the gathering interpretation: it may be, but I feel it's more adequate for veeeery ancient times, when the work of many men was needed to cut down a single tree.
The fact is, that an old woodcutter who makes his own coal in a Park inland once told me that he still cut his wood in November and December, "...when the moon is full".
He's 91 now and he told me that his father did that way too, and so did his grandfather, and there's no reason for me to doubt that this is a very ancient tradition. I'll probably go and look for European Medieval calendars, they often have paintings depicting what activity was typical for each month.
Gotta show you these!
Greetings,
Mauro.
