I don't think it matters what wood you use, I've heard that punky wood will give you more smoke.  Make sure you smoke it long and well; brained tanned hides don't have chemicals to keep bugs off, just the smoke.
I don't have much of anything to contribute about rawhide...

I don't like to use deer hide for raw hide, dog chews are much easier to get.  Soak them and unroll them, then cut into strips.

If you are planning on making a shirt, tan that third hide, you'll need it for sleeves.  You may want to track down a fourth, that way, you don't run out of materials in the middle of the project.  If there is a deer processer near, they will usually let you have it for free.  Try to get one that only got shot once and the guy didn't use a magunum.

And good luck to the three of you.  Bill

As far as smoke, the smokier, the better.  The old rotten damp stuff that is hard to get burning and won't stay burning unless you keep fooling with it is great.

the rawhide is for a shield and a rawhide hammer, the rest is lacing. i was goung to try some leggings, sewing them with rawhide,  and with rawhide hems and brush guards, and possibly a rawhide spearhead...

Going to need some more hides for all those projects.  The two brain tanned are for a shirt?

That sounds like a neat project.  They usually didn't sew with rawhide, they used sinew, from the ankles and from the back straps.  Do you know how to make thread?  Bill
