My Staff Sling.... PICS!
Sep 6th, 2011, 10:23am

Here are some pictures of my staff sling.

The following is the sling leaning against my front door the staff itself is 6 feet long, the sling is four feet.

I can play at Tafl,
Nine skills I know,
Rarely forget I the runes,
I know of books and smithing,
I know how to slide on skis,
Shoot and row, well enough;
Each of two arts I know,
Harp-playing and speaking poetry.

This is a close up of the sling bound for travel, so it works as just a staff at this point.

I've gotten more then 100 yards using a baseball, haven't measured accurately with a rock, but when I was throwing at the pond where the pic was taken I tossed  a rock 60 yards before it crashed into the trees, barely past the high point of the arc.

Thanks, the release mechanism is simply a slot cut into the top of the staff, the release arm of the sling has two knots in it, one allows for the release arm of the sling to be shorter changing the angle of fire. Most staff slings I have seen on here and around use the loop and hook release mechanism (a loop over a hook or notch that releases), but I was thinking this method might work nicer, no idea if it does or not since I haven't tried the other mechanism, but this seems to work very well for me.

Well, the other mechanism sounds like the one once used in trebuchets, so I think it'll be great that you could try both!
Good luck on your experiments,
Mauro.

Both mechanisms are ones that have been used in trebuchets at various times, the design I went with is the one I can actually document as medieval for the staff sling though, and that's why I went with it.

A wise choice, then!
Have you ever had the opportunity to fire a trebuchet?
I had last summer, it was a medium sized one - but it was AMAZING to fire it!
Greetings,
Mauro.

Nice job, cuallaidh.  That's certainly a good looking staff sling.  Isn't it amazing how they throw very heavy projectiles almost effortlessly?  I have to get around to making a new one.  I lent my old one out to a young friend and haven't seen it for a while.

I haven't had a chance to fire a trebuchet, hopefully I do get a chance some day Cheesy

Rat Man: Ya, I was impressed how little effort I could put into the throw and still get great range, in fact it seemed that the less I tried to overpower it the more control I had over the shot.

I think that if every member knew how easy it was to design and make a staff sling and how much fun they are to use almost everyone would try it.  I think a lot of people are worried that they're complicated to use, but the opposite is true.  I've handed my staff sling to guys who have never used any sort of sling before and they fire off their first shot like a pro.  They're almost effortless.
